Why not send ricdoug a PM? Or maybe Nuke Doc? They live there. Surely if something is going on they will know.

Yeah, ricdoug would be a good contact.

There's two regular gigs in North County that come to mind:
Ocean House in Carlsbad on Thursday nights, and
Todays Pizza in Encinitas on Wednesday nights.

Although they aren't San Diego proper, Carlsbad is worth the trip alone.

A couple blocks away is Giacoletti Music (aka - Carlsbad Music) which boast that they have the largest collection of ukuleles in the the states (obviously they've never been to Bounty Music in Hawaii).

And, if you're spending anytime at all in that area, please visit Buffalo Brothers , also in Carlsbad. They have an AMAZING collect of new, used, and vintage ukuleles!

There was a good thread about San Diego, which doesn't show up in my posts anymore. I'll try to look for it.

Feb 28: MIGHTY UKE Film & James Hill Concert

On February 28, 2010 at 7 PM, enjoy a screening of MIGHTY UKE followed by a performance by top ukulele artist James Hill.

Directors Tony Cole and Margaret Meagher have traveled the world (including the Museum of Making Music) to discover why so many people of different nations, cultures, ages and musical tastes are turning to the uke to express themselves, connect with the past, and with each other!

Tickets are $15, $12 for members. For tickets, please call 760-438-5996 760-438-5996 or purchase tickets online.

MIGHTY UKE film

Think of a ukulele and you probably imagine grass skirts, slide guitar and kitchy lyrics, but far from being just a Hawaiian novelty instrument, the uke has a rich history and has profoundly affected music around the world.

Originally brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants, the tiny instrument first captured the musical imaginations of the Hawaiian royal court in the 1880’s. With the dawn of the radio broadcasting age, ukulele music owned the airwaves. Broadway produced ukulele musicals. Hollywood produced ukulele movie stars. The little instrument was so inexpensive and easy to play that by the early twenties the uke was the most popular instrument in the American home and the first musical voice for millions of children. Over the next thirty years the uke was number one, and then, with the rise of rock and roll guitar, faded into nerdy obscurity, until now.

In the internet age, the ukulele is making a comeback. Clubs and ensembles are sprouting up around the world, and a new generation is pulling their grandparents’ ukes out of the closet, challenging our images of the humble ukulele. Ukes top the charts in Japan, Swedish punks thrash uke angst, California popsters serve it to ya ukulele style, classical composers carefully pluck out musicbox sonatas, and all of them meet together at the myriad ukulele festivals from New York to London to Tokyo.

This is not a toy!

MIGHTY UKE travels the world to discover why so many people of different nations, cultures, ages and musical tastes are turning to the ukulele to express themselves, connect with the past, and with each other. From the Redwoods of California through the gritty streets of New York, from swinging London through Tokyo’s highrise canyons to Hawaii, ukers tell the story of the people’s instrument: The Mighty Uke.

James Hill

So how does a kid from Canada become what the Honolulu Star-Bulletin calls a “rare peer” of Hawaii’s premier ukulele players? Nearly three thousand miles east of Honolulu is James' hometown of Langley, British Columbia, where ukulele instruction has been mandatory in many schools since the late 1970s and where James was introduced to the ukulele at the age of nine. To his fourth grade classmates, the ukulele was a means to an end, a way for them to dip their toes into the vast ocean of music. For James, the uke was a sea of possibilities unto itself and inside its tiny wooden shell he saw his life in music. He was hooked.

During his teenage years he honed his skills as a key member of the renowned Langley Ukulele Ensemble under the direction of Peter Luongo. In a full-circle plot twist, James - also a passionate teacher - recently co-authored the Ukulele in the Classroom method book series with J. Chalmers Doane, the trail-blazing teacher who pioneered the use of ukuleles in Canadian schools.

These days, James' music is heard frequently on CBC and NPR National radio. He has made TV appearances on The Tony Danza Show, MTV, Urban Rush and Studio 4 with Fanny Keifer, and has shared billing with Jerry Douglas, Robert Cray, Lyle Lovett and countless others.

Since turning heads with his early recordings, concerts tours throughout North America, Europe and Asia have broadened James' musical tastes and horizons. And while the sense of budding world-weariness that pervades True Love Don't Weep might seem contrary to the ukulele's reputation as a pocket-sized ray of sunshine, the album – a snapshot of two artists coming into their own – radiates a deep caring for music and a certain faith in the ukulele as a four-stringed life-raft for uncertain times.

No, I spoke too soon- we arrive but a few hours too late. Hopefully we can make it to something of the other events!

Hi Ric,

We're performing at Sushi Visual Arts (390 Eleventh Avenue, San Diego) on Saturday, March 6 as part of a group exhibition called "Family Matters". I don't have the time of the performance, but I am planning to post all the details once I do have them on the "regional meet-ups" thread this week. There's a little more information if you scroll down this events page on the Sushi website.
