View Full Version : Is there much of a sound difference between matte and gloss finish?

I bought a Kala Acacia a couple months ago. Its in a matte finish. Recently Kala changed the model to a new glossy finish. They hiked up the price 50 bucks. Is this because the Acacia wood is becoming rare or is this because the gloss finish has a better sound and/or look?

Personally I feel like it doesn't make a difference.

I have an Alvarez mandolin, Mainland ukuklele and Alvarez guitar with glossy finishes. I also have a Taylor guitar with a Satin finish. I like the sound of all those instruments.

Here is one guitar builder's opinion

The Kala Acacia KA-ASAC-C has a light gloss finish. Check it out (http://www.kalaukulele.com/KA-ASAC-C.htm)

MGM, like Dave stated, I checked out Kala's site and noticed that now their Acacia ukes now came with a light gloss finish rather than the matte they sold it as before.

I have the latest shipment in yesterday and sure looks the same to me....the guy who does the website may have altered the description but its still the same finish.....or i will eat my hat
Also Kala will be correcting the website description if that tells you something

I think Kala raised prices on other ukes as well. The cost of shipping has risen recently. I think koa is also more expensive than it used to be.

Me and a few others have made our acacia tenors glossy. I have to say I hear no difference but it sure is a beautiful instrument now. I would think a glossy finish would add to the value if they did change them.
