Wow, that looks amazing. Hopefully it'll sound okay despite being laminate.

It sounds good! How much will this uke be going for? Will there be a concert or tenor size?

It looks like a stained piece of exterior grade plywood to my eyes. Not my cup of tea.

Your words more than do justice to my thoughts on this.

I'm slightly less impressed after seeing the video. The pictures looked nice, but it didn't look so hot in the video...

I'm not really drawn by the looks on this one..

Hmm, I don't exactly dig this one either. Reminds me more of a moth than a butterfly. And I HATE moths. They scare me.

I think I see Chthulu in the grain pattern. Or maybe one of those District 9 Prawns.

lol, i've been bugging Mike Upton about the lack of laminate Sopranos with factory-installed pickups in emails :)
I'm quite happy to see this!

I think it looks pretty cool. Chocolate-y.

Rorschach series...scary...creepy take on "Old World." Almost a self-parody on the search for "exotic woods."

Is that Chthulu or Davy Jones up by where the endpin goes?

I was thinking the same thing. Not my thang either, but I much more traditional, and love the old boring Mahogany, with very subtle details, if any.

To extend the analogy, I'd rather just have a cup of tea...

RevWill: these can be used in music therapy for diagnostic purposes...

they also remind me of that whole "subliminal seduction" thing where in the photos of scotch advertistments...skulls were carefully imaged into melting ice cubes...

"The horror...the horror..."

Is that woodgrain generated by a 9V battery?

Bocote is WAY different from stained plywood. I've made many whistles from this wood and it's great stuff. One possible caveat: it MAY darken with age, especially with lots of exposure to bright sunlight. If they have a protective finish on the wood, this may not be an issue at all. I wouldn't let that stop me.

im actually eying this one for my christmas ukulele. but after reading all your comments, im having second thoughts. is it me or has the design changed? in the kala site (http://www.kalaukulele.com/detail.asp?product_id=KA-BFS), the end of the fret near the sound hole already has a collar cut. compared to a straight cut in musicguymike's pictures.

Occult uke. It'll probably sell tons.

According to Kala'a site, the MSRP is $290. Is it just me, or does that seem a little steep for a laminate soprano?

Had a Pohaku uke with a Bicote fretboard once....really nice wood.

Nice to see a whole uke made from it.

We love this wood - use it now as a solid - it grows where we build. Spell it "Bocote". On this Kala, you are looking at flat sliced veneer. Takes on a completely different appearance when quartersawn. Beautiful dark sound. We have a Tenor with some spectacular figure in the works right now.

You can read a little more about it our our "Woods" page, as well as see a photo of quartersawn grain. On our "Instruments" page you can go to the "Tenor Guitar" to see an instrument made from it: back flat sawn w/ quartersawn sides.
