Maybe best known as the instrument played by 1930s and 40s entertainer George Formby, the modest ukulele is enjoying a surge in popularity.

Once considered a novelty, the prominence of acts such as The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and comedians like Frank Skinner has led to rocketing sales of the four-stringed instrument.

Matt Reynolds, owner of London shop The Duke of Uke, explains the ukulele's appeal... with a little help from George himself.

(Just over 2 minutes)

Very cool, thank you Alan.

I've been to London 3 times and never went there -- all trips happened before my uke obsession.

MUST....GO.....BACK....

That was great Uki. Thanks for sharing. I agree, must go back.

What a great little video.

If I didn't already have a uke (or four...) I'd be going out to buy one. I love that bit at the end - trying to explain what it is that gets people in - the Duke looks at the uke and says "it just says 'hold me and play me'".
