According to Mike Upton- "its come out of the underground."

This is an article from The Huffington Post talking about the surge in ukulele popularity. Some well tread information here (Jake is well credited of course), but interesting also to see the comparisons drawn between the ukes popularity surge in both the great depression and today's economic slag heap.

Could the unexplained continuing surge come from the UU community spreading the uke gospel?

...Of course, we've known the uke's been gaining in popularity, but it was nice to see some actual numbers. Wish they hadn't called Jake a "Japanese guitarist" though.

I agree :agree: Thanks for the links!!

Historically the ukulele was also associated with post-war economic upsurge and the sale of MILLIONS of plastic ukuleles (Arthur Godfrey era). This was an era of increase in all areas of manufacturing, including other mass-produced instruments such as the Fender Telecaster. Maccaferri is of course the designer of those plastic ukueles (who also did guitars for Django Reinhardt). The current upsurge is also the result of an upsurge in manfacturing of a particular instrument with overall improvements in manufacturing that first benefitted guitarists. With that said, there will most probably be a second economic dip following the "bailout" which has NOT created jobs, nor increased manufacturing or home sales and when stimulus package salaries (next year) return to former levels with higher taxes.

Jake Shimabukuro is an American of Japanese ancestry.

The main idea for me: ukuleles are great...just like they once were for a Hawaiian King when he heard a man fom Portugal play. And the follow-up is great. Not bad at all to devote one's self to the ukulele, good times or bad.
