i managed to route the side of my index finger today, severing both tendons. surgeon says amputation might be the best thing for it, if you can imagine that.

this is another reason to get a cnc router!

i am typing w/my left hand, so forgive me if i'm not as verbose as usual!

i will keep you abreast of my progress.

sorry to hear that. i hope for the best

Hang in there Matt Clara! What a week you are having. I am sending good thoughts your way.

At the risk of being insensitive -sounding, and to ask the sort of question bicyclists ask each other after a wreck ("Is your bike hurt?"), was it your fretting or strumming hand? Hopefully the strumming hand, because it seems like that would be easier to adapt to.

Also, I know that if I had to lose an index finger, I would rather it be on my right (strumming/plucking) hand.

Strumming! My problem is I basically type and run a mouse for a living, i'm on a six month contract that theey're about to renew. I'm sure they still will, but I'm not telling them about the severed tendons until i get a second opinion!

Ouch.

How'd it happen? Did something catch and pull you in? Or did you get distracted?

Caught and pulled me in. I should have read up more on router table safety before i used it. i just bought it, used, two weeks ago. this was the third or fourth time i used it. it's an accident, but if i hwdn't had my handws on topof the work, this never would haave hap[pened. i could kick myself.

i was msking one layer of a uke form. i made a couple others, no problem.

Oh Man are you having a tough time this week.

I pray you will heal well

Yikes! Sorry to hear it...

You'll think "easy for you to say", but try not to get discouraged; I've worked with many a cabinet maker who had less than the full compliment of fingers. It takes a while, but people seem to learn to make do.

I know, I'm a regular drama queen this week!

man, that is awesful news. Hopefully your finger can recover and you can get back to fixin' that uke!! I wish you all the best and my thoughts are going out to you and your family. Best of luck mi amigo. Keep us updated!

Wow Matt,
I was just typing to someone else telling them about my accident.
I slipped while using a table saw and ran my thumb into the blade, five stitches. This was a month ago and it could have been much worse.
It only takes a fraction of a second to make a mistake.

Oh wow, Matt. Sorry about your finger. Sounds a little past the usual super glue and blue tape fix. Hope it heals OK . If they gotta cut it off at least it won't be in the way next time. I need to go count my lucky stars. Seriously though, either way it'll be OK. We get through these things, as sucky as they are. I used to have one of those side click mice with the ball in the middle, might work.

OMG! Get a second opinion from a hand specialist ASAP!

I managed to sever the tendons at the base of my left pinky some years ago and a very competent hand surgeon was able to repair them. My hand was in a cast for six weeks, then I had several months of occupational therapy. The therapist said it was one of the worst possible hand injuries and that my recovery was remarkable "especially for someone your age" (think I was 47 at the time). She also said that musicians make the best clients because they're highly motivated to regain the full use of their hands.

I lost a bit of extension in that finger, can't straighten it out all the way, so in effect, that finger is 1/4" shorter than the one on the right hand. I can still play guitar, but occasionally there's a stretch I just can't make.

I used to have one of those side click mice with the ball in the middle, might work.
This is the one I use:

Yeah, Orthopedic surgery has a sub-specialty for hand surgery. Go to them, not the surgeon you saw in the ER. Not sure if it's even possible, but you may want to ask about the possibility of grafting tendons from another finger(i.e. non-dominant pinky) or your forearm. Good luck

Wow, Matt - it makes your crunched uke from yesterday seem like nothing at all! Take care of yourself, get second and third opinions if necessary! Hang in there!
