Hey ukulelejunky, great contest. One question...can the song I do be a parody of a cover song?? I like to take a popular song and change the words for the kids I play for. What do ya think?

Thanks for these questions, it made me realize that I had some missing info!

So
You will be judged based on these criteria

- Song choice
- Quality of the performance and the video
- Originality of your musical arrangement
- And overall feeling!

In a nutshell you should try, just to do it is a victory by itself...

^ That's very helpful. :) I have two more questions, based on the above info:

1. Does that mean some marks will be based on video quality? Because I don't have any good recording equipment :(
2. Does the musical arrangement have to be your own then? (As in, do you have to have transcribed or tabbed out the song yourself? On the one hand I don't think I should be marked well for someone else's arrangement, but at the same time, that very much ups the level of the contest imo (well, at least it does for an amateur like myself ;) )).

Sorry...just wanting to clarify! =) Btw- having two prizes is awesome and really generous of you, so thanks very much for hosting the competition!

Some marks will be given on the effort put on the video... If we feel you have tried hard, you will get some points. I we feel you did not care for it... you will loose some... It doesnot have to be HD and all techno, but the quality and the effort in the video will have an impact for sure.

For the arrangments, yesI guess that we need to feel that you put your own signature in the song.

im in, just gotta make the video, got a cover all sorted, great contest by the way, on a side note i love how UU has this here, i think it is so refreshing and that people from all over the globe with vrious degrees of musicianship can have a go, thats what its all about ay, enjoying making music.
i play this game with my wife on youtube where we have to pick a song and see if there is a ukulele cover of the song, it is really hard to find songs that havent been covered so for my entry i am going to only cover a song that has not been covered before for uke. a challenge right there, but have found one, as i think the band i am going to cover might not lend itself to being covered by ukulele easily, and to be honest it has got the old brain going on being creative on how to achieve this, i wont give any more away until i have done the video, but im pretty happy with how its going right now

Still no videos and such a great contest. Well I suppose some sucker

I did not learn it from Clapton or Cale or even the great Brownie MacGhee,
but instead from a tired, drunk, homesick Scotsman, on the beach at

Cool contest! You've inspired me to go waaaaaay outside my comfort zone as far as song selection goes. So I'm picking the old Tex Williams / Merle Travis county and western classic, "Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette." (Commander Cody recorded an updated version, but it's a tad raunchy for this application!)

Erhhhhmmm

When I hit that link I just go to my OWN playlists
But of course I do get things wrong.

In the past folks on UU have just made a video on Youtube explaining
about the contest, and then participants have just added their videos
as a RESPONSE.

Another thing that I have seen done is for the person who is running
the contest to EDIT their ORIGINAL post on UU and just add links
at the bottom of the page. That works too. I think the main point
is to generate a list somewhere for easy access and viewing

All the best

Same thing happened to me, except my playlist was empty (probably because I never put anything in there...). Video responses are a good way to go, but the edited OP is good, too. Maybe both? Video responses will bring more people to your YT channel perhaps, but don't take it from me - I'm pretty new to the YT world and a lot of it boggles my pea brain, quite frankly.

I really should pay attention to these details! :nana:

Two Ukuleles on offer... so why not two entries?

Oh and the voice is my deep rumbling phlegm choked
Leonard Cohen impersonation (I have a cold) and anything
to curry favour with the Canadian judges. The style
is sort of Magnetic Fields who used vintage films in many of
their videos.

Some people talk with their feet under the table, but in
silent movies the actors spoke with their hands.
Watch the hands if nothing else.

here is my entry for your competition

when choosing a song to cover i wanted to choose something no-one has covered yet with ukulele, there are so many uke covers on youtube, i wanted to do a cover that hasnt been done before

song is Starpower by Sonic Youth from their album EVOL.
i have said it is performed by my band the transit of venus, we are a duo from melbourne australia, never released anything never do gigs, we are uknown, however in this case it is all myself, i have multitracked and the instrumentation is the following:
Ukulele - multiple tracks, one with a warm fuzz added.
the springs of a snare drum
broken guitar tuned down for bass line
detuned and weathered piano - performed in multiple ways, pizzacato, bowed and hammered, on a side note not many people used weathered detuned pianos to make music, and rarely are they bowed, to bow a piano it needs to be pulled apart and horse hair from a cello bow or some fishing line or other type of string is used to vibrate the strings as with a violin or other similar instrument.
the only electronic sound is some white noise otherwise it is a completely acoustic recording.

my concept was to try and capture the essence of sonic youth acoustically, Sonic youth not being associated as an acoustic band however they have done an acoustic version of this song for some TV show

recorded using logic pro and film made with final cut pro.
i could tweak to film clip more but how much time do i have in a day to spend film editing.
anyway i am prettty happy with this cover. but i just wanted to get it into the comp here

thanks for the competition

song is Starpower by Sonic Youth from their album EVOL.
i have said it is performed by my band the transit of venus, we are a duo from melbourne australia, never released anything never do gigs, we are uknown, however in this case it is all myself, i have multitracked and the instrumentation is the following:
Ukulele - multiple tracks, one with a warm fuzz added.
the springs of a snare drum
broken guitar tuned down for bass line
detuned and weathered piano - performed in multiple ways, pizzacato, bowed and hammered, on a side note not many people used weathered detuned pianos to make music, and rarely are they bowed, to bow a piano it needs to be pulled apart and horse hair from a cello bow or some fishing line or other type of string is used to vibrate the strings as with a violin or other similar instrument.
the only electronic sound is some white noise otherwise it is a completely acoustic recording.

my concept was to try and capture the essence of sonic youth acoustically, Sonic youth not being associated as an acoustic band however they have done an acoustic version of this song for some TV show

recorded using logic pro and film made with final cut pro.
i could tweak to film clip more but how much time do i have in a day to spend film editing.
anyway i am prettty happy with this cover. but i just wanted to get it into the comp here

thanks for the competition
and here is my entry

Well I would just like to say that the set of strings that you sent me for being
the first to enter your contest have arrived. Thank you very much and to break
them in I decided to do another video. It is an old calypso from the 40's originally
done by Sir Lancelot but has also been done in a ska style by The Wailers and
also as a reggae by Madness. This version is not any of those styles if anything
it is rocksteady

Yikes! I almost missed it. Here's a little Tom Waits, just 'cause. Sebi's bass uke has been calling me, so I played the bass line on my baritone and dropped it an octave in audacity.

Yeah I liked him a lot that bass player. He could be in my gang any day of the week.
He was extravagant, expansive, and completely overboard. Lost in music, oblivious,
in that place where technique is forgotten and primitive exuberance bubbles up from the heart.

In other words a tidy bass player

Here's my first entry. Hope to get another one on before midnight. You told me to "go for it" with a parody. So here it is. Ingrid Michaelson's "You and I" changed to "Boo and I". Hope you enjoy and thanks for having this contest. This was so much fun!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oMx-FDY8eY

Here's the lyrics:

"Boo and I"
Don't you worry there my bunny
Even though the day's so sunny
We'll play games and have a lot of fun
Baby I think your cute and funny
Baby, oh, not for love or money
would I give you up, if you know what I mean

CHORUS
Oh let's get rich and buy our carrots at a store in the south of France
Let's get rich and give every bunny a home and grant them all a chance
Let's get rich and build a hutch on a mountain makin' all the people look like ants
From way up there, Boo and I, Boo and I

VERSE 2
Well you might be a bit bemused
You won't get your booty bruised
Boo, I'll take care of you like no one else
So I will help you feed at brooks
If you will soothe my worried looks
And we will put the lonesome on the shelf

CHORUS

You'll see why I put this in as my #2 entry. The kids love it. Parody of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", a song by Jim Croce.

Mine is "Bad, Bad, Coon Named Scrounge".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7Ucu6kJbaQ

Lyrics:
Coon Named Scrounge

On, the south side of Forest
lives the baddest raccoon around
And if you go down there you just better beware
of a coon who's name is Scrounge.
Now, Scrounge he's so onry,
you see, he stands about 3 foot tall
All the mama's call him the “Midnight Bandit,”
all the Dad's just call him “Cur!”

CHORUS
Well he’s a bad, bad coon named Scrounge,
baddest coon in the whole darned town
He's badder than a Wolverine,
meaner than the monsters in your dreams.

Now Scrounge, he’s a rambler,
and he likes your garbage can
And he likes to behave like a bratty child
chewin' holes in the attic fan.
Well, he wears a fantom mask,
He's got stripes like a lemur too.
He's only just begun to make a mess here son,
He just put poo poo in your shoe.

CHORUS
Well Friday, ‘bout a week ago,
He sniffed a scent that did entice,
He went into the tent of a girl named Doris,
and ooo, that girl smelled nice!
Well, he crawled into her lap,
Then she pet him like a cat, but
Ol’ Scrounge learned his lesson ‘bout messin’
around with a tent full of girls like that.

CHORUS

Well, all the young girls were frightened,
When they saw it weren't a kitty cat
Oh, they shrieked so loud,
and then they all passed out
and they squashed that raccoon flat.

Well he was a bad, bad coon named Scrounge,
baddest coon in the whole darned town
He's was badder than a Wolverine,
meaner than the monsters in your dreams.
He's was badder than a Wolverine,
meaner than the monsters in your dreams.

Cover of Michael Johnson's "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf3ji4U-ldE

She is fixed in his mind like the picture
He's kept in his wallet for years
And the image has never been tarnished
By the blood, sweat and tears
And to him it appears

That the moon is still over her shoulder
And the ribbon is still in her hair
And he can still see her dancing
And music is still in the air

Sometimes he finds it amazing
That all of his children are wed
When their mother is still turning eighteen
And turning his head
She still turns his head

And the moon is still over her shoulder
And the stars are still falling above
And she never gets one minute older
And he is still falling in love
