I don't know how long this has been around but I just encountered it:

They call it a "mini guitar" but with four strings tuned DGBE I think it's more like a uke. If you click on the "alternative view" you can see it's very small -- I'm thinking sopranino uke scale. $60 kit includes built in amp and speaker.

Anyone ever tried one?

Found this review, not very complimentary: http://www.guitar-list.com/guitar-projects/gakken-mini-electric-guitar-kit and this detailed discussion http://threestepsoverjapan.blogspot.com/2009/12/gakken-kit-review-mini-electric-guitar.html.

That'd be cool to have. I wouldn't play it, though.

I bought these for my granddaughters and they love them:

Sized for younger students and fans of the electric guitar, these Junior Guitars have built-in amps and speakers for playing and practicing without the hassle of extra cables and amplifier. A single 9 volt battery (not included) allows you to set up and practice just about anywhere. Overall length is 36". Two 1/4" speaker jacks also let you crank it up a notch and quality components assure the best sound possible.
