It may sound like a joke, but Ukuleles for Peace is succeeding where the politicians fail. "Words seem only to divide," says Paul Moore, the one-man band behind the project, "but music unites us all in harmony."

And what better way to bring Jews and Arabs together, than seeing their children play this small, easy-to-learn four-string Hawaiian guitar?

English-born Moore holds weekly Ukulele classes in schools in neighboring Jewish and Arab towns, bringing the children together for regular rehearsals and performances as a combined orchestra of ukuleles, kazoos and other fun instruments, singing in Hebrew, Arabic and English in old people's homes, music festivals and peace events.

Video and more at the link.

Yup, this is a great thing! I went all through his website a few months ago, probably before I joined UU, forgot all about it til now. Thanks Seeso, again, for keeping the ukes progress in the forefront. I'm telling y'all, UU is a brewing pot of ideas and talent. Give it a bit more time and the people here are gonna start some great things with the uke paving the way!!

Paul is also a hoot. He sat around at my place a couple years ago and played a naughty song from The Cheap Suit Serenaders. I loved it so much I had to add it to my repertoire.

Alas, it's not one I get to play too often as I'm mostly busking for tourists and there's sure to be somebody who'd get all bent outta shape about it. Even though it's just naughty, not dirty.

I want the orange one! (Strictly for peaceful purposes...)

very nice thing he's doing. children are the hope for the world.

Wow, yeah this pretty much brought me to tears. I think it's such a wonderful thing he's doing. I can't wait to read more of the progress.

bringing people together with music :)
sounds like a pleasant idea,
that is so awesome that he is doing that :worship:
this world could really use some more peace

"paper crane i shall write peace on your wings
and you shall fly all over the world..."

wow. amazing. beautiful. peace.

yay. finally!

if any of you happen to look at some of my posts you will know that this is what i have been standing for for the past 3 years!

peace through music.

and tell me there is a better instrument, than the ukulele, that stands for peace!

just listen to Iz, Jake, Seeso, or Aldrine!

it brings joy to my heart to hear that people of different religions, races, and lifestyles can come together by means of a little piece of wood with strings on it.

NOTE: I dont really think that the ukulele is a "little piece of wood with strings on it". It is much more than that too me. To me it is a symbol of peace. But I just used those words to make it sound cool.

:p

I just read about Ukuleles for Peace in the Ralph Shaw newsletter. The organization promotes interaction among Arab and Jewish children in Israel through their participation in the Ukuleles for Peace Orchestra. The Orchestra's leader would like the Orchestra to play at the United Nations in New York. Ralph Shaw, who lives in Vancouver, is involved in raising funds to get the Orchestra to perform at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February 2010 because he thinks that playing at the Olympic Games will bring the kind of attention that will get the Orchestra invited to the UN. It seems like a pretty cool use of ukuleles.

There is a spin off of this group too that uses ukes in Northern Ireland. I love both of them. I believe Jake S. once said that if everyone in the world played a uke there would be no need for armies (or something like that). Some one can tell me what he really said but it had the same meaning.

This is truly amazing!!! Please excuse my ethnocentrism, but the world needs organizations and people like this!
