Anyone know where I can find a Koaloha Tenor Sceptre? They seem to be hard to come by.

Have you tried contacting them (KoAloha) personally???? They are very nice folks.

Poppa KoAloha is making a batch of Pineapple Sundays right now, then he is going to do a batch of Sceptres. So in about 3 months there should be more on the market.

You can also go to their website & view the dealer list. Start calling around & see who has some in stock. I have found success doing that.

It all depends on your sense of urgency. :)

Ukulele Source in San Jose, CA had one in their shop when I was there last weekend. Super nice people too. Don't know if they ship but I imagine you guys can work something out. If you call, tell them that Mark from Sacramento sent you over.

Hmm, so now I have three months to save the money and convince the spouse that my Pineapple Sunday is lonely without a fellow KoAloha near her. Ooh, that is going to be a tough one. I think it will be harder to do the convincing than to do the saving. My mom and friends already want me committed as an obsessed UAS sufferer. Of course they have no idea what UAS is, they just think I'm crazy.

I work just around the corner from Acoustic Vibes...great shop and Jeff is a helluva nice guy! I was just in there on Monday, and while he didn't have any Sceptres, he might be able to help you out. Here's the link...

Thanks for all the leads! I took me forever but I think I may have located one (fingers crossed!). It will cost $1250 (this includes shipping). So here's my new question..LOL.

I was also considering the Ko'aloha tenor which is $900. So for a few hundred dollars more, I can get a sceptre. Is the Sceptre really that much better than the standard tenor? Or am I just better off saving the money and just getting the Sceptre.

My thoughts are that the sceptre is more like a work of art and will not depreciate in value, if anything, over time it may appreciate if for whatever reason I want to sell it.

Your thoughts please :)

Well I was in your same shoes. I went with the sceptre b/c I got a great deal on mine. I have been very pleased with it. I have played it along side some koaloha tenors and it is as kloud as two of them. I will end up with a koaloha tenor eventually but it has to have the crown bridge. So basically you will not go wrong with the sceptre.

I think you should definitely opt for the Sceptre. They are very tough to find, and I don't think they will ever depreciate in value. The tenors won't depreciate either, but there are many more of them out there. The only exception to that might be if you can find a tenor with a crown bridge -- like haolejohn and I would like. Those are increasingly rare and no longer made. Sceptres are not made often, but they are at least not discontinued yet. If you don't buy that Sceptre though, I'd be curious to know where it is. :)

considering you wrote your choices as (1) for a few hundred dollars more, I can get a Sceptre; or (2) am I better off saving the money and just getting the Sceptre,

:)

I think your choice is clear. I'm not above typos (make many myself), but I think this is your subconcious telling you what to do and you will undoubtedly regret it if you don't buy it.

I love both the KoAloha Tenor and Sceptre. I think they're both quite different. And I'm sure neither of them will depreciate (esp since my tenor has a one piece top, back, and sides, and a rare crown string through bridge--you pull the string through the soundhole to tie the knot). The Tenor has a more traditional ukulele sound, but with more bright tone and more treble. The sceptre is more of a booming sound. Of course, the sceptre has the cooler look, and makes all your friends say OOOOoooOOH, but both are beautiful. You'll probably end up getting both eventually...so it becomes a question of which one you want more at this point. Both are excellent choices.

Ok I ordered the Sceptre this afternoon...the guy says he will ship it out tomorrow so I am hoping I have it by the end of the week:) I'm very excited as I think I will be very happy with it. Now I need some feedback on humidifiers and hygrometers. This will be my first all wood uke, so I want to make sure that I don't destroy it with low humidity...although living in Florida, I don't think humidity will ever be an issue. Any suggestions on a good company for a humidifier and hygrometer? and where I can order it?

Thanks,
Dan

Mike at ukerepublic had some cases with built-in hygrometers (the thing that measures humidity right?)

I ended up finding mine at ukulele source http://www.ukulelesource.com. They were very nice over the phone and email. In fact the store owner gave me his cell phone so I could contact them today (sunday) to arrage for payment and shipping (they are closed sundays). They told me that they will be shipping it out first thing in the morning. To find it, I just happened to contact every place I could find to see if they had any.

I was just there late yesterday afternoon. Didn't see this ukulele on display so Smiley (yes, that's the owner's name) must have taken it off display for you. He came across as a really amicable and even-keeled guy. I was impressed with how well the shop was humidified (you can see the cool-mist humidifier running and the entrance is kept closed).

Smiley played six, maybe seven, ukuleles for me so I could hear the differences in tone from the front of the instrument. The one that best suited my taste was a KoAloha super concert strung in Low-G but it's above my budget.

Smiley and his wife were great! They were very accomodating to my needs and answered all my questions. I felt very comfortable ordering from them and would HIGHLY recommend them. Mine was probably in the back room when you were there cause I asked him to email me some pictures...LOL

Actually, I was in the "back room". This is a small shop and it used to be half its original size. Business has been good so they had to turn the back room into an extension. Half of it is still an office (desk and PC), storage space for cases, and a packing/unpacking area. Your KoAloha was probably in a case somewhere there.

After hearing the KoAloha super-concert, I was reconsidering my budget. Regretfully, they were out of KoAloha tenors and they don't get enough in. I think Smiley said they'd be lucky if one arrived before summer was out. I suppose that just gives me more time to shop around.

the septer has very good sound and is make of solid hawaiian koa wood so it will aprreciate in value over time only draw back is that the comfert level is verry low but the sound of the septer and the tenor koaloha model is verry diffrent so ur jus gonnna have to decide which tone u like better myself i like the septer sound verry clean and clear well hope this helps good luck

GVLog, MGM on ebay had a few Ko'aloha tenors available last time I checked.

I can not begin to tell you all how impressed I am with ukulele source, I just got an email from them telling me that they are shipping my sceptre overnight so that I will have it tomorrow and they are only charging me for standard shipping (not overnight). I ordered it yesterday and they shipped it today overnight and I should receive it tomorrow...that's QUICK service. I guess the real test of this company will be if the item comes in one piece. So far everything is going perfect that I am afraid something horrible will occur..LOL.

Yay for Smiley and Janet! They're super nice and I'm glad you gave them your business. Can't say enough about how great they are to work with. If you're anywhere within driving distance of their shop in San Jose, its definitely worth the visit.

Enjoy your Sceptre!

Don't tempt me into an uke-unheard impulse buy! I know that they're probably good but I have a demanding ear.

Judging from the boxes that were lying around, I'm sure they know how to pack safely. If there's a problem, it's usually the shipping company.

The funny thing was that Smiley and I were actually talking about the challenges of doing business by mail when it comes to instruments like guitars and ukuleles, and about shipping insurance. That's why they prefer in-store sales and haven't set-up an online store.

Congrats on the Sceptre! I look forward to mine in a few months!

My favorite humidifier is the Oasis. The cheapest I have found it is $16.95 (free shipping) here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036FFKE2/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00189Y832&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0SYT3M20S8RCVCER954F

I have bought 3 from them and their service is awesome!

ugh..my ukulele did not arrive by the guaranteed express mail time. Good news is that the seller will get her money back for shipping; not sure if she will reimburse my portion of the shipping that I gave her. Bad news is that I don't get to play with my ukulele tonight and probably won't get it tomorrow since I will be out and about all day and won't be around to accept the package if it arrives. I knew things were going too smoothly.

FINALLY, IT ARRIVED!!! It got lost twice (despite the package being properly addressed) but it finally arrived today and my shipping charges are being refunded to me.

In any case, it's a beauty! I absolutely love it and can't wait to take it home to properly tune it (I had it delivered to my office). I can't say enough great things about Ukulele Source (www.ukulelesource.com). Not only did they throw in a premium case for it which I was surprised. I thought it would just be a very basic case but I was completely wrong, this case is a beauty. They also included a laminate chord chart, a humidifer, and extra worth strings.

I was also surprised to find out that the pick up actually had a volume control hidden out of site in the sound hole. I am very pleased with my new ukulele and am very pleased with the customer service that I received from ukulele source.

Jeez, you'd think for the price of a Sceptre they could've at least included a solid chord chart. :p
