Apparently, Aldrine had NO IDEA how to pronounce "Mya-Moe" correctly. :D
For the right way to pronounce "Mya-Moe" please check out the Corrected-Pronunciation Mya-Moe Contest Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8TnSvwywZQ).

Hey UUers!

This month (April 2010) we're giving away a brand new Tenor Mya-Moe Pacific NW Aloha Series Ukulele!! It's a solid curly myrtle ukulele, and since myrtle trees are abundant in southern Oregon, the home of Mya-Moe Ukuleles, they wanted to know about your 'home'. So the "From Our House to Yours" contest goes like this:

1. Make a video of a song that tells us about your 'home'.
2. Upload it to YouTube.
3. Submit the video in this thread.

Be sure to mention the Mya-Moe/UU "From Our House to Yours" contest at the beginning of your video. The song must be played on an ukulele. Only one entry per person.

Songs can be originals or covers (just make sure to give credit to the writer/performer of the song). "Home" can be anywhere - your room, your house, your town, your country, your planet - just as long as you consider it your 'home'.

Entries will be judged on creativity, passion, and how well the song reflects how you feel about your ‘home’. Anyone with a good idea could win it, regardless of ukulele skill, so have fun with it!

1st Prize: Tenor, solid maple, mahogany neck, ebony fretboard, geared tuners, pearl inlay, Mya-Moe Ukulele + hardshell case w/ built in thermometer & hygrometer.
2nd & 3rd Prize: Mya-Moe T-Shirt & Mya-Moe Ukulele Strap!

Deadline to enter: April 30, 2010

Post your entry below - Good luck!!

Awesome prize from some awesome people!

Mya-Moe is high on my wants list. I've spoke with them a few times and they are incredibly nice people.

How do you like the neck on yours. Can you compare it to a KoAloha? I am more interested in the bulk of the neck. I can deal with wide or narrow, but I prefer thinner overall.

Definitely gonna try and come up with a good song/vid idea for this one. I've heard nothing but good stuff about Mya-Moe ukes and it'd be great to have one in my arsenal.

Aldrine, no worries about the mispronunciation. In high school I gave daily news updates via intercom and one day I kept reading ouija (pronounced: wee-jee) as out-ja (yep, like it's spelled). Yeah, that was pretty dumb.

Good luck everyone!

...does anyone know the song that Aldrine played in the video?

In the contest video, Aldrine was noodling around with the verse chords to "Hele On to Kauai" (http://www.tropicalstormhawaii.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?pid=song&song=lj/hele_on_to_kauai.txt) - a song that really represents our home! Here's Iz's version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dPGnBojAQ

Nope. What we had planned for March took a little longer than we expected, so we postponed it until May. But don't you fret, DeG - it will definitely be worth the wait (you'll see) ;)

Do there need to be vocals in the song? I'd prefer to just play a little tune that expresses my feelings instead of sing it =P

The necks with any string instrument are usually personal preference. Some people have larger hands, smaller hands, longer fingers, different hold styles, etc etc etc. But if it's close to something you're used to, you might like it, or be able to get used to it.

We're fine with instrumental submissions for the video.

And, in terms of the neck--our are all hand-shaped. As Dane says, people have different sized hands and are used to different sized necks, so we try to respond to that when we shape the neck. That having been said, literally 99% of our customers prefer our "standard" neck. It's a bit thinner than most, but for my hands it makes the neck "faster". It also reduces the weight of the instrument and puts the balance point where we like it (at the dovetail neck/body joint). We inlay a graphite rod in every neck for both stability and tone (stiffer is better).

We had one person ask for an even thinner neck, but after playing it they didn't like it--too thin can cause cramping in the hands.

That is a great service.

I love the sound of your NW Aloha Series. I will be in your area this summer and hope I can stop by to try your ukes.

How is the volume on your NW Aloha series compared to your Koa or Mango?

THANKS!

Hi David,

The loudest one of those three (myrtle, mango, koa) right after they're built is usually mango. But, the myrtle will open up the most over time. Within about 6 months, it is at least as loud as the other two, and it develops a great bass response.

Hi!
My name is Jake Loew.
This is my entry for the contest.
It is a piece that I wrote in my front yard right after I got home from a long trip, so I always think of a nice day in my front yard when I play it.
I also talk about my new CD in the beginning because hopefully more people will see the video.
Thanks for watching, and keeping ukulele music around.
Enjoy!

everyone was out of step except for her son... that's how I fell about my entry
I am sort of out of step with everyone elses vision of home.

Anyway The song is by Ewan McColl and called Dirty Old Town, though
perhaps it is more famously done by the Pogues or the Dubliners.

The film clip is public domain and is called "The City" and contrasts a
idyllic rural setting to the squalor and poverty of an industrial town.
I only selected scenes that went with the lyrics so it is all grime and smoke,
but regardless of location, it is community that makes a home.

Okay, here's my entry. I thought about how to do this, whether I wanted to just record myself singing and playing, but then I thought it might be better to challenge myself. I haven't played to a live audience in over two years, and I've been really nervous about getting back up on a stage. So I figured this contest was an excellent reason to swallow my butterflies and give it a go.

This song is called "Home" and I performed it live tonight in Santa Barbara. It's an audience recording, and the sound is a little wonky because people in front were snapping their fingers and someone near the camera was tapping their foot which made for a bit of a thumping sound towards the end. But it's the best I could do with the limited equipment I have available to me.

In my nervousness I referred to it as a "competition" and not a "contest". I hope that doesn't disqualify me!

Anyway, I hope you like it. Here it is. I posted the lyrics in the video description.

Feedback and comments are welcome. Mahalo!

An original song by the Provines' home right back at you.

Lyrics: There's a place I call home, (first house on the street)
I share it with my family, (I think its kind of neat)
We often laugh until we cry, (and I look up to the sky)
And watch the clouds go swiftly, by (as I let out a sigh)

Home.... I love my home
Home ... I love my family

Mom's always doing laundry, (she says it never ends)
Dad plays his ukulele (and chats with his on-line friends)
Y'all just come right on over, (and play a little Wii)
We'll toss around the football, (and have a glass of tea)

My brother's going to college, (he's almost on his own)
I'll take over his room (I'll tell him on the phone)
We don't watch too much t.v. (it's a masquerade)
Home will always be in my heart (It'll never fade)

(The cool sounding uke was my Nehemiah Covey six string ukulele)

Sorry for the xtra post....but here are my lyrics for my song "Home is Where You Hang Your Heart"

Home is Where You Hang Your Heart
By Mark Cummings
April 10, 2010
Sittin on the back porch swing
Were coasting on the Indiana breeze
Watching the dogwoods bloom
On a lazy afternoon
Some say homes where you hang your hat
But I think its sweeter than that
Its sunset walks and talks together
Pancakes in bed and the Sunday papers
Home is where weve face our fears
Have our laughs and wipe our tears
Where we watch the seasons pass
Our love grows into a love that lasts
-Chorus-
Home is where you hang your heart
Home is where you hang your heart
Home is where you hang your heart
And Im hanging mine here with you
Im hanging mine here with you

Home is where my brother and sisters
All come and get together
We share our hopes and dreams
A circle of friends just cant be beat
We like to sing our Glory songs
Sing em deep from within our hearts
We all join our voices together
And sing away our troubles forever
-CHORUS-
Home is where you hang your heart
Home is where you hang your heart
Home is where you hang your heart
And Im hanging mine with all of you
And Im hanging mine with all of you

Home is where I hang my heart
And Jesus says, Give me all you got!
Then I get down on my knees
And thank him for saving me
And I cant wait till we all meet
Get our halos and our wings
Well dance around on golden streets
Strumming sunny songs on ukulele strings
-Chorus-
Home is where we hang our heart
Home is where we hang our hearts
Home is where we hang our hearts
Lord, im hangin my with you
Lord, im hangin my
I say Lord, Im hangin my
Lord, Im hangin mine with you

It is a real Utopia. It is a real utopia.

Red sheets, green walls, two chairs(in the same room)

I love the contest here at UU, I don't know why but I seem to only post new vidz when there is a contest, maybe cause I get a chance to upgrade from my Kala, so my entry is a cover of Counting Crows Miami. I've been around the world even lived in Pearl City, HI and while I was there i still missed home, so I know that Miami is what Home feels like. I took some artistic "responsiblity" (freedom) with there song. Good luck peeps, I have already seen some great songs posted, really great songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijAvAfz5y7k

And, as long as I'm writing on this thread--to all that have submitted, it is incredibly humbling, gratifying, and just plain wonderful to watch what you have done with our initial concept. We sit here every day watching the new videos and going through the old ones. When we said "entries will be judged on creativity", we had no idea just how creative you would be. We are *so* glad that we did this contest.

The contest runs through April 30th, so if you haven't yet submitted you still have time!

Hi!
Arthur Godfrey was the king of the baritone UKE in the 50's. My house was originally home to Arthur Godfrey's sister-in-law and later on Arthur Godfrey's son. I learned the song from an old 78 record long before I moved to this house. It seemed to all come together with the baritone Uke....

I'm playing a ukeola (baritone uke made by a violin maker). Wonderful as it is, my house (and I) would welcome the arrival of a ukulele that looks like a ukulele.

But since I made this entry before I knew that I won, I'd like to post the video without entering the contest.

"クラップダンス (Clap Dance)" by Pick2Hand was written by 椎名洋輔 (Shiina Yousuke).

Why does this song mean home to me?
My home is where my wife Aya is. It doesn't matter, if I'm in Switzerland or in Japan. As long as I'm with her, I feel at home. We used to listen to this song when we studied at Kansai Gaidai in Osaka, Japan. Ever since, we have been dancing together through life.

Oh my gosh Sebi, it's great. And...it's perfect for my daughter. I can't wait till she get's home from school so I can show her your vid. She sooo loves the Japanese language and culture, anime etc. and just sadly got declined from a program yesterday to attend a summer governer's school 3 week submersion in the Japanese language. She is so bummed out. Perhaps your video will enspire her to play the uke with me, or just on her own. I've been trying to get her to join me for some time now. Thanks for putting this on here anyway Sebi. Ummm, would there be tabs available for this song?

Were you really crying? That means a lot to us (that it touched you, not making you cry) Brit actually cried too after I played her the finished song. This is really a great song. It means a lot to Brit and after hearing it, me too. I'm happy you enjoyed it provines!

My name is Blind Lemming Chiffon and this is my entry to the Ukulele Underground/Mya Moe "Our Home to yours" Ukulele Contest. As a Colorado native by birth, this tune by interloper Utah Phillips delights me with its unabashed satirization of my state's rampant xenophobia. Originally recorded by Grubstake back in the '70s, and not available in stores.

At first i found it really hard to come up with a song that reminded me of home. I had to decide where and what home is for me.
I decided home is my parents house in S.Wales, when i was a boy. This song reminds me of my parents, my house and my home.

Thanks for the opportunity to share with you guys, thanks for a really cool competition.

I chose this song because I like humorous songs, and this one is perhaps more obscure than other humorous songs about Denver and/or Colorado. Doing YouTube and Google searches on "Denver" in combination with "Sparks" and "New Christy Minstrels," you find out that John Denver was in the group with Randy Sparks, and that Randy was the person who suggested that John adopt "Denver" as a last name, but you don't find any videos or MP3s. I think that situation should be corrected.

I picked the song because I wanted to compose something of my own. As I was writing I realized the ironies of Vermont, that the imperfections are what makes it perfect; thus, I wanted to end it on an ironic note where I caution people about coming to Vermont because I really want it to stay small.

I picked Roads to Colorado by Michael Fleming because its a song I know well and it lends itself to my basic ukulele playing skill. I sing it in the car as Im traveling, especially when Im headed home. It talks of wonderful places all over the United States, and Ive been lucky enough to spend time in each of the places mentioned in the song. As much fun as it is to travel,
there is something so special about seeing the Rocky Mountains through my windshield. The snow-capped Rockies call me home again! This song has always been one of my favorites, as I am a Colorado native. I recently did an album featuring songs about traveling AND coming home. Roads to Colorado is the title track. How thrilled I would be if I got to take a new Mya Moe Uke to Augusta Heritage Centers Swing Week in Elkins, WV where the ukulele class RULES!

This is my entry to the Mya-Moe/Ukulele Underground ukulele contest.

For me, home means the simple things in life.
Sometimes it is easy to lose sight of this when things get hectic and we do and see the same things day in and day out. It's when you are away from home that you can really see what is important to you. That is what this song is about.

Two notes:

1. The bass line was recorded by me using a Fender Jazz bass and a Zoom H4 recorder.
2. The background image is the actual view of a portion of our property as seen from our garage. Due to the contrast, I didn't want anyone to think it was an electronic image pasted into the background.

Complete lyrics can be found on my YouTube page.

I hope you enjoy it!

HI!

Not sure where to ask this so I figured I'd give it a shot here. Just found out about the contest but was wondering if there would be problem with an R rated song? Wanted to do Team America's theme but it's pretty heavy on the F-bombs, I could modify it but it kind of has a different effect so wanted to make sure it would still be elligible.

Also, is it okay to enter more than once? That's a pretty sweet uke...

Here's my entry into this contest. It was quite a journey. For some reason, all manner of technical difficulties plagued this video. The camera malfunctioned, my computer crashed, there were bugs in the software. I spent three hours on the phone with Apple today. In the end, I had to reinstall my operating systerm from the original disks and then do all the software updates. There was still a bug! Finally, I got around it. Then, I noticed that I had said the name of the contest wrong. So, I did a last minute overdub. Then, there was an error uploading to Youtube, my computer crashed again. Well, to make a long story short, the 4th time's the charm.

After all that, I hope you enjoy my video! :-) I have enjoyed watching the other entries.

Here is my entry in the Mya-Moe "From Our House to Yours" Ukulele Contest.

At first I drew a complete blank on what song would say what home means to me. Since I was a kid I've moved a lot, attended boarding schools and never really developed an attachment to a place or even a routine as home. But after a couple of weeks of pondering I started thinking about when I had felt that I had returned home. I've had some opportunities to spend extended periods of times away from the land of my birth and it occured to me as I remembered coming home that I had a real feeling of homecoming as soon a the plane landed no matter if the place was Hawaii, LA, Miami, Philly, NY. It was home. So with this in mind I have selected "An American Hymn" for my song entry. This is my first production of this type but I'm mostly pleased.

...just in time! Here's my entry to the contest.
It's called "God Please Clean This Mess" reflecting the everyday mess in my flat... afterall we're supposed to talk about "home" so I wanted to keep it really straight :)

It's an original tune, I've had an awesome time doing the recordings and the video even if it only took us a couple days. I've played a Lanikai Concert, my electric Risa Tenor, keyboards, bass and the iPhone. Drums are from the guys at Beta Monkey, it's the Alternative and Modern Rock Drums volume. I've doubled the samples and used iZotope Trash for a "splish-splash" background effect.
I just love distorted vocals... the Eels are one of my favourite bands so I've thrown a blend of Trash here and there... and I hope you'll enjoy the result! Sorry for my english folks... I'm trying to do my best but every now and then I chew something!

Last thing! There are 3 subliminal messages all over the video... Nothing offensive, I swear! Find them, let me know what you see, the timing and I send you the mp3 :)

Hey there! Haha, procrastination got the best of me, but here's my video! Hope you like it! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3CIUN9P2u4

My goal in making this video was not only to share my wonderful city, but also capture the spirit of the people who live in it. No matter the circumstance, the people of New York continue to move forward. The lines "the city keeps on going, we just keep on rolling," epitomizes this spirit and is the reason why I chose this song.

Hello everyone, this is my entry for the contest! I'm so excited! :-)

I really wanted to win that beautiful Mya-Moe ukulele, so I worked hard and spent a lot of time writing a song and making a video for everyone to enjoy!

I miss my home country so bad, and I knew right away to write about that. I got a little too emotional after I wrote this song that I literally had a couple of tears roll down my cheeks after I played and sang it once. You know, being a girl and all. :P

Here it is, and I hope that you guys enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed watching the other entries!

And I don't know if raddest is even a word or not, but I thought that naming it "The Raddest Place On Earth" was pretty rad.

This contest is what made me get over my shyness and decided to actually put up a public youtube vid with me singing (I don't do it well, ohnoes). I did it though, this contest inspired me so much! I also haven't commented here much - again, so shy as I'm very much a beginner. Also, it was an emotional trip, thinking/singing about the person and the places that inspired my song choice. Did anyone else find that the contest brought out strong emotions, like the comment above (and me!)?
I fell in absolute love with the Mya-Moe uke the moment I saw it, and as myrtle is one of my favourite trees, I loved it even more! I know whoever wins this contest will take so much joy in it, and I can't wait to hear their review and see/hear the music they make with it! I also can't wait to FINALLY upload my entry tomorrow morning, and be done done done with it. (Note to self: When you don't get up the courage to make a contest entry until a few days before the due date, don't choose the more time-consuming form of media to do it!)

Hello everyone :),

here is my entry for the contest :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvlw2DoEnFw

It's an original instrumental build around some samples I found that fit what I wanted to express about this place.

The pictures you will see on the video are all taken around the lake that is 100meters down my street in the town where I live. This is where I've grown up and lived a lot of good thing's.. Meeting people that are now really good friends, walking along learning to love watching the nature change each day, doing never ending barbecues,...

Have all a good day ;)

Lyrics

A beautiful woman
thought I knew somethin'
I lost the love of a man.

Betrayal, yes, it stung
When I was very young
I found the love of the land

Virginia's my home
Dogwoods all in bloom
I'm strong and in charge of my plans

Back to my roots
Wild ponies I'll ride
This is my home
I'm happy inside

Love just fills my life

A beautiful mountain
The cardinals singing
I lost the anger I had

Believe me, yes, I sung
I felt so very young
I found the love of a man

Children in our home
One is almost grown
We're strong and in love with the land

Back to our roots
Wild ponies we'll ride
This is our home
We're happy inside

Love just fills our lives
Love just fills our lives

Hello,

Here is my Mya-Moe contest entry. My home is the port of Kingston Upon Hull in the UK, and I've tried to take the viewer on a quick tour of some of the places I visit in my day-to-day life, plus some glimpses of the seasons and local happenings I've filmed on my little camera.

The music is an instrumental called La Noye by Yann Tiersen. I was always fond of this tune; the original recording is played with accordions & violins and this contest was the perfect opportunity to try a ukulele rendition.

The title of the song actually translates as 'The Drowning', and my home is a city which historically suffers from flooding, being on a river and near the coast. But this isn't a sad tune, it's actually quite positive and fits the spirit of the place.

My first post and first entry to a uke competition - hope you enjoy it!

This is a song that reminds me of home - we've been singing it in my family for years. Now that we're all over the country - Florida, NJ, Washington State - Home is not a place, but a state of mind. We're all about keeping it positive, keepin' it sunny! Can't wait to see all the entries! Pat Rock

Hi. My name is Garrett Jones and this is my submission to the Mya-Moe "From Our House To Yours" Ukulele Contest.

Growing up in a family with eight children, we have all grown up learning to love one another despite the trials that we face. This song is a church hymn called "Love At Home" that I have grown up loving. This song proves that despite who or where you are, there is no greater feeling or place to be when there is love at home.

Well, down to the last minute;) I had high hopes for making a more edited video, but couldn't find the time to cobble it together this time around. So, me in one of the empty apartments that I'm allowed to crash in when I drive through the Sacramento area... this song for me is exactly what home is... an odd little ditty about falling in love and spending time in life with someone no matter what your location:)

Home is where the heart is!

I couldn't post anything and I couldn't view anything. However, for some reason now I can. So if there was indeed a problem with the forum and not just my own issues, I would like to finally post my video. So, this is my submission, if you guys will allow it, into the contest.

Did anyone else have forum issues or was it just me? I could not access the forum from about 10 PM HST to 9 AM HST and I tried sooooooooo many times between that period. I could view the top of the page but I couldn't view any posts or pages and I could not post anything. The rest of the internet work normally but opening this page slowed it down; it even crashed a few times. So if someone had similar issues, let me know because it would be nice to know if it was my computer or the forum that was causing problems. Thanks

Ooooookay. So I finished my movie on the 29th. But with 6 hours of rendering, 17 hours to export, three failed upload attempts and a broken forum, I didn't actually get it online until now. So, I know I'm out of the running. But, that's okay. I wanted to make this video and deadlines help me. I'm pretty happy with with it and wanted to share it. I'll only leave it up for a couple of days because Youtube messed up the aspect ratio again. I'll reupload a better version later, but here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTAQQhg1z_4

Well, here it is, a song about going home. It is "I don't want to live on the Moon," originally sung by Aaron Neville and Ernie. Since I don't sing as well as Aaron Neville, or even Ernie for that matter, I decided to it as an instrumental. I've been meaning to come up with an arrangement for this song for a while, and this contest was the perfect inspiration. I came up with the arrangement the first week of April and have been practicing it every day since then, and I still think the song needs more polish. That manic grin I'm making at the end of the video is because I made it all the way without too many flubs. The location is the rooftop of my current home in NYC.

When I was a kid my family used to travel a lot. Which was great, although I was also an extremely sentimental kid and got homesick pretty frequently. This song from Sesame Street always resonated with me for that reason and I couldn't get enough of it when I was little. It still gets to me today.

That was incredible. And you're doing actual animation. I'm using a patented technique called Lame-ation, a mix of poor drawing skills, mind-numbingly simple stop motion and equally simple digital editing.

This reminds me that I need to go back and watch the rest of the videos I missed.

Well, I enjoyed watching gioconbrio's and yours shoepixie. Wish I knew how to do those animations. My youngest daughter would love it. "I Don't Want To Live On The Moon" has always been one of my favorite Sesame Street songs and was one of the first songs I learned to play when I started playing the uke but, it's no where near as fancy as yours gioconbrio, thanks for posting it.

*blush* well, don't give me credit for too much technique...I drew a bunch of pictures and took a few thousand shots with a webcam taped to a milk crate..in other words, I have NO idea what I'm doing! Just mucked about and figured as I went. I just...well, I had a lot of fun, and it was really cool to watch it once the pictures were moving about...

If your daughter would like to try, it's totally fun! It's VERY time-consuming, though..for me 3-5 hours for about every 20-30 seconds of film. Starting with little figures or toys might be a good way to get into it?

Wow, we are totally blown away by the variety, quality and number of videos that were submitted! The judging is underway, and we *hope* to have it completed by the end of this coming weekend. Here's how we're doing the judging:

* we have assembled an independent panel of judges
* judging will be based on creativity: song, interpretation of "home" by virtue of song selection, and video
* each judge will apply the criteria and submit their top 5 choices
* judges rankings will be combined to determine the overall winner

Thanks for participating!j

hmm... I guess this is a phrasal idiom but literally it means "if and not true and good found" because that verb needs an accent otherwise a simple "e" stands for "and".
translating your phrase would be something like that: "se non vero, ben concepito".

I agree to your ps. Come to play in Italy! :D

Hi everyone! Really enjoyed all of your videos that I've seen so far. If anyone doesn't want to have to trek through the forums to watch all the videos, I made a playlist that can be accessed from this url :

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=BDDC1C0002A7C953

Here it is embedded:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/p/BDDC1C0002A7C953&hl=en_GB&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/p/BDDC1C0002A7C953&hl=en_GB&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="385" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I may have missed a couple (wasn't able to get that last awesome one - "I Don't Want to Live On The Moon" for some reason), so let me know if you want me to add your video to the playlist.

Good luck to all of you! What diversity and fun I saw displayed here! Can't wait to watch the videos I haven't yet watched.

This is a great idea!!!
I also want to make the note that i want to dedicate my song to my mom. Over the last year she beat colon cancer but it has sadly returned to her liver. She will now begin her treatment once again and will not be able to stay in her home to do this. I want to ask any of you who do pray to pray for her.
And once again thanks a lot for holding this contest and hearing my song and now hopefully she will hear your prayers :)

Hey Kelsey,
My prayers are with you and your Mom. Loved your video. I think you should get some kind of prize for wearing your shorts and playing ukulele in the snow!

Thanks also for putting this together. Not sure why mine doesn't work. But since I still need to reupload a version with the correct aspect ratio, that's just as well. I'll let you know when it's up and running.

That being said, I think this contest spawned more high-caliber responses than any I can recollect (at least within my relatively short time here at UU). Well done, everybody.

Wow thanks for the playlist, made it much easier :)

As for the suspence - I gave up on the Idea of winning a while back. So many high quality entries. I now however, vow to make a video of that caliber. That being said I still check here everyday, to see who actually gets to tuck that beautifull Ukulele in at night.

I like to name my instruments, I named the mya-moe Ukulele Rebekah. Would be nice if the winner keeps her name :)

As we watch, and re-watch, and watch again, we are really struck by these songs. You see, for us, the great thing about building ukuleles is to see what our owners do with them. We are just building a tool, and we were never able to imagine just how it would be used. This contest has been the same way. The concept & idea behind this contest was Char's with input & refinement from our friends at UU. But, even as she conceived of the contest, we didn't have any idea of where people would go with it. Making ukuleles is not a money-making venture. We do it because we are inspired by the people that play them. Thank you.

Gordon & Char! Many thanks for all your kind words, you can see how much creativity you spawned, not to mention people had a good time! We're all so appreciative of your generous gift for a prize as well, you guys do great work. I know you're coming out here in a few weeks, hope to get over to the NY Uke fest and say hello. My sister, Eileen Rock, lives out there - so she's technically a part of YOUR uke community (I just got her hooked this year), and we've spent time in White Salmon - it's a great group of people and a beautiful place. Thanks again - Pat Rock

Want to give all of you an update on the voting & timing. Unless something goes terribly haywire (like 2 months ago when Char had to have an emergency appendectomy on Sunday afternoon!), we will announce the winner by 5pm Sunday, PDT. It may be earlier, but no promises. We will announce on this thread, and we will likely create a new thread entitled "Mya-Moe From Our House to yours WINNER!", or something like that.

I believe that since it seems that every one of your available ukes on site begin with something like "Another baby that Char has fallen for. This one she has named Feather..." or "It is possible that Char will simply not let this instrument go..." or "She calls this one Snowflake..."

I also noticed and would like to point out that last week ALL your ukes were spoken for, and this week you have FOUR! jump on em like hotcakes people, I'm pretty sure there used to be a few more yesterday. they wont last! I had never heard of Mya-Moe before, but I'm completely sold on it. I'll have sell some cbu's and save up if I dont win

hmm... I guess this is a phrasal idiom but literally it means "if and not true and good found" because that verb needs an accent otherwise a simple "e" stands for "and".
translating your phrase would be something like that: "se non vero, ben concepito".

I agree to your ps. Come to play in Italy! :D

Oh my gosh, I feel so silly now! To be accurate, I don't really know for sure how to say it 'correctly', and if you @jontom would like to let me know how to, that would be brill! As far as I know, it learned it as, basically: 'Even if it isn't true, it makes a good story', which is pretty much my artistic philosophy one life. Thanks for asking, even if I do feel silly about not knowing precisely what it means.

Haha don't worry pixie!! A lot of people say italian is one of the toughest idioms! We've got tons of rules, verbs and... stuff!
I'm glad to share a little bit of my homeland :D Now I got it... It should be something like "Anche se non vero, una bella storia" or... hmm "Lo so che sbagliato per funziona". But this is not literal, it's more like "I know it's wrong but it works"

Hmm. Not as sleek and pretty on the page, but more accurate. Drat. Thanks though! I would love to hear possible workarounds - I love the way the one I have looks and sounds (in my head, that is) but I don't want to go about with nonsense in my sig. Dilemma in my pocket!
And yes, my Italian is mostly stuff dealing with food. Mm, food.

Man I hate to sound like a negative nelly, but if I knew that video was a part of the criteria I would have made it a little more entertaining. I was led to believe that it was all about creativity, passion, and what the song means to you, but apparently its about the video quality and some other stuff. Obviously if you look at my vid its a p.o.s. but I thought it met the criteria pretty well: I thought the song was pretty creative: trust me, it's not meant for uke (unless you have a bass sting on top, but then you might as well play guita, right? Why limit yourself?), it took a long time to get that take (u can kinda tell by my frustration, i left it in because it fit the theme). The song I did actually means a lot to me, it kinda sums up our arrogance and ignorance: ("If you're not with us, you're against us."). The song sums alot up to me, I guess I should have explained it. Obviously. Basically even on the criteria that was sold to us I was beaten many times over but if I knew I would have submitted something much better. I think the guy w/ his daughter singing should win, that video rules.
I'm sorry if this is in bad taste...
Mya Moe, please offer up another contest! Ths one was so much fun and I want to win!

"Entries will be judged on creativity, passion, and how well the song reflects how you feel about your ‘home’. Anyone with a good idea could win it, regardless of ukulele skill, so have fun with it!"

the video is creativity, also reflective of passion...it also aids in communicating "how you feel about your home"
the song is primary of course, but a video really helps round the whole thing out. I say this pretty fairly since I dont have time to search to remember with was yours again, but look at it like this.

all things being equal between an original song and a cover...you give the nod to the original.
all things being equal between a song with a video and one w/o...you give the nod to the video. its more creative and took more time and effort. Thats my guess on how judges would view it.

Of course I want to win, but realistically, there are so many great videos and performances that my chances are slim. However, this has been a very rewarding experience for me, regardless of the outcome. For one thing, it gave me the motivation to finally come up with some words for this little tune I've been working on. It's the first song (with lyrics) I've ever written, and I'm pretty proud of my little baby. Maybe it needs a little work, so if anyone has some constructive criticism, please leave a comment or reply here. Here's the link again to my vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFZB8yWAWrQ

And thank you Gordon and Char! What a great idea! Thanks,

Doug

I don't know about original vs. cover...to me at least, bringing one's own unique perspective and musical style to a cover can hold just as much creativity and originality as an original song - that is of course provided one puts their own 'stamp' on it. I feel like mine is something in between - a traditional tune, but with two verses I wrote (re-wrote? changed?) myself; for me it was a fusion of my own songwriting and the traditional songs I grew up with and still love.

I don't think the Mya-Moe people sold us a lousy tune! They seem like great folks and like others have said, I'm glad that this contest got me to create something I'd not have done otherwise. I not only revisited the idea of 'home' and did a lot of digging around in great memories (I tell some little stories from my travels in my vid) but made my own version of a great song and tried stop-motion for my very first time! I just wish I was better at not letting my hopes be more than the tiniest seed. Drat on that!

@Dougf: I will totally comment on your vid! I'm halfway through my mission to comment on every single one, so I may have already commented on yours. I'm crazy nervous about my songwriting, too. Maybe we should team up on something?
(wow I sometimes realise how much I overuse exclamation marks.)

I can go along with that...I speak in generalities, so you gotta roll with the general idea of what I'm saying, otherwise it'd just take too long to say. Although it is more work to write a song from scratch than reworking an old one...but that is not to say one is better or worse, just more effort.

I like good contests because I rarely ever actually FINISH a song...I'm easily distracted

Shoepixie
05-09-2010, 10:58 AM
I can agree with that...especially if we're talking pure work effort. Changing around a song to be something utterly different might be more of a challenge.....of course,. speaking only for me. Writing songs isn't hard for me,(at least the writing part...) but making a song fit my range, my style, my playing abilities is a....I'm not sure h ow to put it. A puzzle? In that there are certain rules I must follow and a box I must work within. Not disagreeing with you, just adding my own take. I do like hearing your thoughts on it - writing songs is new to me, so it's interesting to hear how others approach songwriting. Me, I"m impressed by anyone who can manage more than a few verses before being kaput.

Hey guys I am really really sorry! I had way too much loudmouth soup last night and I feel like throwing up for putting negative comments up! I am a total Jerk and I hope you can forgive me. I haven't read any comments yet but jeez, there's just no call for that!

I really enjoyed participating and I can't wait for the next (though I may be too ashamed to enter).

I don't know what else to say, but I hope you can forgive me!

Now lets see who won! I loved watching everybody elses videos by the way, this was really a lot of fun!

I'd love to, but now you're a big star, and I'M NOT WORTHY! :)

But seriously, I've recently come up with this haunting, old-timey groove that I want to turn into a song. I was thinking of calling it "Gold Miner's Lament" and using quasi-archaic phrases like "bade my true love farewell", or "toiled from dawn to dusk". Anyway, just an idea. I'll post a clip of the groove soon as I get a chance.
