View Full Version : Toilet ukes, let's see 'em

I realize this is bad form but I was just wondering if anyone else has played their ukes in the can.
Acoustically, there is so much going on in the bathroom. Somebody at a local uke meetup suggested that we keep a uke in every room. Pictured is an M32 flea, a Vineyard Boat Paddle and my Ashbory bass

So if you get 'em, let's see 'em.

I liked when someone called the kala pocket uke a good "pooper-uke" haha. I can't lie, I've been super into some riff before and taken my uke with me.

The fact that it will fit in the bathroom with me when I'm on the throne is one of the chief reasons I play ukulele.
Besides, I can stink both literally and musically, and nobody is going to come in and stop me.

Um, no. Not to sound crude, but I am the master of the power dump. I am in and out of the can in under 60 seconds and don't have time to pluck around while I'm there, nor do I have the inclination to linger.

I don't actually keep any ukes in the bathroom, but I have played just about all of them on the can. I find that I can't camp out in there long enough to read, but can strum a few chords to cover up the sounds of nature.

Our bathroom is hardly big enough to turn around in, it's a 1940s row house (tiny) and the cabinet alone is dangerous enough to me as I've cracked my head on it a few times, so I never thought of taking a uke in there as there is no safe place to set it down. Plus it seems this thread confirms it's mostly a guy thing.

HOWEVER, I took my tenor in and had a seat (lid down, Levis up) and wow, it sounded great, I could really get to hear the quality of sound because of course, it's a bathroom! My other half decided to do djembe practice about a minute later, perverse thing that he is, but I could still actually hear my uke with the door shut, and he had the drum set on the hardwood floors, so the neighbors up front two doors down could feel it, if they couldn't hear it too!

So thanks for the thread, because as noted I wouldn't have really thought of it without you all posting about the acoustics. :D

I try not to spend too much time in my bathrooms...they are straight out of the 70's (one is what I would call baby poop green, and the other is goldenrod yellow) and it is physically painful for me to spend any length of time in there.

I do like to play in my crawl space though. You have to crawl through the door, but once you're in there there's more headroom. Bean bag chair, lava lamp, and my uke...good times in the crawl space.

I do enjoy a good "camp", and I tried to keep a uke in the bathroom for awhile.

But there really wasn't enough room for it, what with the magazine rack, stack of books, TV, toaster oven, mini-fridge, cotton candy machine, box of Legos, ship-in-a-bottle kit, and pinball machine I already have in there.

I come from a long line of bathroom readers (my grandfather always called the bathroom "The Library"). It's a good place to read because, really... who's going to bother you? I must admit that I have played uke in there on more than one occasion, but not when my wife is home (she thinks reading in there is strange enough). I don't KEEP a ukulele in the bathroom, but I have taken them in many times. I find that a uke stand is a good thing to have on hand, so you don't knock it over or drop it when you're ....ummm.... finished.
Now I have a George Formby song popping into my head that is making me laugh about this thread.... "With My Little Ukulele In My Hand".

I do sometimes use the bathroom as an isolation booth with natural reverb, however, I don't mix strumming and going.

The bathroom is also a good place to play late at night without disturbing others.

If you leave a uke in there all the time it's a good way to get a spalted uke for no extra charge.

I have to say I have never played while on the toilet but I often take my uke or sometimes acoustic guitar into the bathroom. Standing in the tub with the tile reflecting back the sound is one of the nicest sounding spots in the house (and I have tried them all!)

I recorded the vocal part of my Grim Grinning Ghosts for the Disney contest in the bathroom. The sound was a lot better. To make it not look like a bathroom (and it is a teenie half bathroom) I added a lamp with a red bulb and a blacklight....

Blacklight + Bathroom + 7 kids (3 are boys, 2 girls are newly potty trained) = I DID NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU DON'T SEE WITH THE NAKED EYE!!!

But yes, acoustics were great... but after that I am NEVER keeping my Uke in there!
