Hi, Not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot but does anyone know how to get the effect on your voice to make it sound like you are singing into old microphone from the 40's? If that doesn't make sense it also sounds like its an old record being played. Kinda like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfbokuwky9Q (voice starts at 1:111 in)
I am not a fan of my voice and this seems like a decent way to temp. mask it and sound cool when doing Dean Martin covers but I have no idea how to do that kind of stuff (I have Audacity and Sound Forge if that helps)
Thanks

there are probably specialist filters, but i think compression will do it (i think)

There are a number of software apps that do this. The first one that comes to mind is T-Racks mastering. You can also achieve this effect by tweaking EQ with a tiny tiny bit of distortion. With the EQ you basically want to raise the mids and drop all of the high/low ends.

That's the "poor mans" way...

Quoted for truth (in my case at least). I used to spend a good deal of money on mics and recording gear. I've found mics that I really like, I'm happy with my current recording set-up, and it seems that any excess money I have nowadays go towards ukuleles. So, in the few instances where I need the "radio" effect, the EQ peak works for me!

Adobe Audition had tons of filters which do this, depending on how extreme you want the effect. One is called "Hold the Phone" which reduces the volume a lot but creates the effect you want. (Sort of the cheerful voices singing Yellow Submarine in the background of the Beatle's song.) Just boost the levels after its done, a voila! Audition lets you hear the effect before altering the recording, plus, you can undo it right after if u don't like it.

Audacity might have a similar filter. My advice though: Just get used to your voice.
