I went by the place on a Saturday at 11:30...nobody there. I sent him an email asking what the hours were of the shop...no reply. I visit on the following Wednesday at 1:30 and theres nobody there again...

Whats the story? Mr. DaSilva hasn't returned my calls either.
I really wanted to shop there, locally, but I just went ahead and bought online....

His place isn't really a shop. It's the studio where he builds the ukuleles he sells. He'll be there from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday May 23 for a "Jazzy Ukulele Workshop" ($20) with Glen Rose. http://www.ukemaker.com/Calendar.html He's also there every Wednesday evening. On the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, he hosts the Berkeley Ukulele Club, and on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, he leads a beginner ukulele class. http://www.ukemaker.com/ukeclub/ I've been to a few of the events at his studio and he's a really nice guy. I don't know why you had trouble reaching him, but you can talk to him if you're there at the times he's stated on his website that he'll be there.

So what ukulele did you end up buying online?

Okay thanks.
I had already purchased my 'ukulele. I was interested in buying strings and accessories.

Mike's a ukulele luthier and his studio isn't really a store. For strings and accessories in the East Bay, try Music Works in El Cerrito (www.ecmusicworks.com) or Fifth String in Berkeley (www.5thstringberkeley.com).
