Does grain direction matter on a wood saddle?
I ask this because one of my ukuleles uses 4 individual 1/4" diameter saddle pieces instead of a typical 1/8" x 2" slab. Because dowels are used, it got me thinking if grain direction influences the transfer of the string vibrations to the soundboard.
With dowels the grain will always follow the length so the vibrations are moving from the string in the same direction as the grain.
FWIW, I am currently using walnut for the saddle pieces and I really like the blend between bright and mellow.
