How to Make a Split Screen Video

I want to make a video that has me playing two instruments on a split screen one on the left one on the right at the same time. What free editing software are folks using for doing ths (if any)? I use MS moviemaker and it looks like it won't do this.

You can get split-screen available on Windows Movie Maker, but you have to install an additional plug-in called "Rehan ShaderTFX".

It's for Windows Vista, and it will cost $15 to register it permanently beyond the trial period. I paid the $15, and it's been paying off well for me

I think if you're running Windows XP, you can get the split-screen for free (search on that site).
I don't know what the story is with Windows 7.
