Hey UUers!

This one took awhile to get together, but it is finally here! Up for grabs is a one-of-a-kind, Kanile'a Tenor "Ukulele Underground" Ukulele!! *gasp*

Joe Souza over at Kanile'a was kind enough to take the time out of his hectic production schedule to create this one-off especially for UU ... and now it can be yours!

Here's how:
1. Play your ukulele and make a video for the contest
2. Upload your video to YouTube
3. Submit the link to your video below

Only one entry per contestant (so do your best!).
Contestants will be judged on creativity, originality, and how they "Spread the Aloha" using their ukulele.

First place wins a brand new Ukulele Underground-branded Kanile'a Tenor Ukulele (+ case). Second and third place winners receive Kanile'a T-shirts!

Last day to enter is June 30th, 2010.

Looking forward to seeing all of the creative and wonderful ways you guys come up with to "Spread the Aloha" using the ukulele! Have fun & good luck!

*Edit* This contest is now closed. A big MAHALO to everyone who entered! The judges are still looking through all of the videos and the winner of this beautiful ukulele will be announced shortly. :D

Spread the Aloha? Im little confused with that part :/

This one is totally up to your interpretation - we wanted everyone to really get creative with this contest, so there really are no guidelines for how you go about Spreading the Aloha. As for an explanation of the "Aloha Spirit" - it's basically a positive attitude or frame of mind. It includes sharing, caring for others, helping, being kind, cooperating, and solving problems harmoniously. In Hawaiian, the word "Aloha" can be a greeting or salutation such as "hello" or "goodbye" - but it can also mean love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathy, pity, kindness, sentiment, grace, charity, or consideration.

So it's totally up to you! Can't wait to see what you come up with :D

I hope I am not the only one here who read "spread aloha" and chuckled. I swear, I laughed every time Aldrine said it in the film. Where's the outtakes for the intro film? :P Haven't heard that phrase used in a looooong time...can't even find it on urban dictionary...good times....

Well, good luck to everyone who enters the contest. That's a beautiful uke!

What a killer prize! Spreading aloha with a uke and being competitive against other ukers strikes me as a paradox. Don't you think?

But I think I have a better chance at the former. I may have to give this a shot. But my chops are not that great :(

I just need to know a few things:

1. Can it be instumental?
2. Can we do covers?
3. Is the uke constructed with "Total Resonance Ukulele" cantelevered bracing?

Oh! Okay I got it now, "Aloha" I only thought this was just in translation hello and goodbye, I was thinking "that kind of narrows things by alot" But yeah I get it, i'll just use one of those words you listed Anaka, and convert it into something mind-blowing (hopefully) Good Luck to everybody who's thinking about participating

I have to say this contest prize is something you dont want to skip - One Super Ukulele? Oh Yes Plaaayze! :shaka:

What a killer prize! Spreading aloha with a uke and being competitive against other ukers strikes me as a paradox. Don't you think?

This was definitely a dilemma when we were brainstorming the concept for this contest, but the mission of Kanile`a has always been to "Spread Aloha through Music," which we really wanted to incorporate and praise people for. So if you are using your ukulele to put good out into the world, what ever your aspirations may be, the end result of "Spreading Aloha" is all that should really matter, right?

I just need to know a few things:
1. Can it be instumental?
2. Can we do covers?
3. Is the uke constructed with "Total Resonance Ukulele" cantelevered bracing?

1. Sure! 2. Of course! 3. Yup. The TRU bracing system (http://kanileaukulele.com/truBracing.php?osCsid=9f603a6fe05024dee9ebe3e3e5c5 adac) is a standard practice on [almost] all Kanile'a ukuleles. If you can find a Kanile'a without it, you've probably got yourself a super-custom or a relic!

Sure! This is an open contest so you can do pretty much whatever you want. Remember though, the focus is to show how you Spread the Aloha using your ukulele, so as long as your video shows that clearly, you should be good.

can we enter into the contest a video we've already made, if we think it's applicable, or should videos be specifically created for the contest?

As long as the video was made by you, any video is eligible - however, know that we will only count one entry per contestant (your first entry) and that in most judges eyes a video created especially for a contest usually carries more weight than one that wasn't. But it's totally up to you - If you got one that really applies to the theme, go for it!

I posted this on YT in an aloha tribute to my 8 yr old son's little league team. They were terrible at the beginning of the season and battled back to make it into the championships (where they would lose to the #1 Padres). I never saw a bunch of kids so excited to lose a game as that last one, just getting there showed much aloha spirit!

I am submitting an entry to the UU "Spread the Aloha" Ukulele Give-Away Contest! I used the ukulele to accompany one of my favorites by Waylon Jennings. This song exemplifies the harmony of a relationship. If we "do the best that we can," we can find happiness in most any situation and "Spread the Aloha." Thanks, Idaholele

That ukulele looks sooo cool! Sadly, I'm only a beginner with finals right around the corner so I don't know if I'll be able to enter. =/ I have a chord progression already made up with a strum pattern but I have trouble finding lyrics to fit it and I can't exactly sing that well lol. If I do enter my idea for the video would be:

-I'd have a voiceover kind of thing of me playing the ukulele while the video is playing,
-I'd have a sign saying "Aloha" taped on my chest,
-I'd play my ukulele for random people in the mall/street, and
-I'd give them those little Hawaiian flower necklaces in hopes of brightening their day and "Spreading the Aloha."

=] good luck to everyone!

I made this "drum machine" to help me "spread the Aloha" when I go busking round the streets of my hometown....
The song starts 30seconds in;

"A Little Bit Of Love (Goes A Long Way)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkkn9UxB8TU

It's played on an old old banjo uke we found in a friends granmothers attick....

I recently visited Spain & found out that the words translate brilliantly into Spanish:
"Un Poco De Amor (Lo Es Todo)"
(A Little love is everything):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqIVzDxVxF0
(The first video is my entry.....unless of course you think the 2nd one better?)

....the words also translate out of Scottish as:

"It doesn't cost much to tell someone you love them
Doesn't cost anything at all
As far as i can see,
It's completely free
So save your pennies...
Use words"

When I win, I will raffle the uke back to you lot and give the money to a cancer charity.

Here is a pic' of me and the drum frightening some kids:

From the amazing movie Harold & Maude:

Brilliant and very wonderful movie....some people may find it a bit weird, but it has a beautiful message and if you haven't seen it, you should!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067185/

Brilliant and very wonderful movie....some people may find it a bit weird, but it has a beautiful message and if you haven't seen it, you should!
Here's the original song...my dad used to sing it to me when I was a baby...and 30yrs later I discovered the film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYxOWPzZXBM

my dad used to sing it to me too! And also, Harold and Maude is fantastic.

Thanks everyone so much for all the nice comments! :D

this is such an awesome competiton, the spirit of the competition spreads so much "aloha" as it is!
so i had a million ideas, but have little/no time to complete them since i have my school exams at the moment.
so, perhaps i will try get one video completed, but the competition is kind of intimidating haha

anyways, everybody has been really fantastic so far, and if i do submit a video, it'll barely compare! although, if i spread the aloha, who cares if it isn't that good :P

I agree, the competition is so intimidating but so fun to watch! I keep going back and forth if I want to submit mine, but as you said, as long as we are spreading the aloha, does it matter if it is that good?
Hope you get a video in despite school stuff. I love seeing everyone's entries!

yeah, if i do submit something it'll have to be a pretty simple/stripped back cover perhaps... my friend that usually accompanies me is a seriously high achiever at school and refuses to jam with me haha, so i can produce anything with much complexity. he's not really feeling the aloha..
but in the end, i guess (in the spirit of aloha!) that something is better than nothing.

which is why i insist that YOU submit something!
in fact, i DARE you :P
if you do, i will also hehe

So many imaginative entries! Mine's a little different. I spread aloha by singing and playing our favorite instrument at a hospice hospital. The ukulele's gentle and melodious voice is the perfect instrument for this setting. People often come out of the rooms with big smiles on their faces and stories about the ukulele. Hope you enjoy the song and images from Christopher House.

Hola fellow Ukesters! :)

I apologise in advance for my appearance and shaky vocal, I was a few days before open heart surgery and suffering from aortic stenosis when I wrote this song. I didn't know if I was going to make it or not, neither did my doctors. But, I did! So I recorded this a week after I got home from the surgery. I'm hoping you'll judge the song and it's intention, more than the performance.
Thanks

Here's my entry into the contest. This is an original blues song. My idea of spreading the aloha was to write an original song and present it at my local ukulele circle. Then, to upload that performance so that others at UU and Youtube, could grab their ukes and play along. I chose the blues because the repetitive chord sequence makes it easier for people to join in. So, please get out your ukes. Blues in the Key of A. I have more details in the song description on the Youtube site.

The chord sequence: A7 D7 A7 A7 D7 D7 A7 A7 E7 D7 A7 E7 (6 times, last time end on A7).

A bittersweet song about spreading the Aloha in a different way.

I had a dog named Blue, Best dog I ever knew; Found him in a drug store parking lot
Shivering, cold and wet, I carried him to the vet; Got his shots and gave him a bath
<Chorus>
He went everywhere with me; became part of the community; Went to the old folks home on Saturday Nights
He’d lay there patiently as withered hands would stroke his fur and reminisce….. about times past
He could sit, he could bark but his gift was to bring about a spark of life; I guess he knew what that was like
<Chorus>
Time keeps running on; the day starts with a new dawn but not for Blue. It was his time.
15 years came and went, time I count well spent, since we found each other.
Blue cheered up countless folks, not with funny jokes but spending time with them; together.

Come on blue, time to go home; the day is done and we don’t need to roam anymore today.
You brighten up people’s lives; you don’t even have to try; You’re just who you are. A happy dog.

Come on blue, time to go home; the day is done and we don’t need to roam anymore today.
You brightened up people’s lives; you didn’t even have to try; You’re just who you were. A happy dog.

Just found out about competition and just joined UU. So no time to create new video although there are some great entries. Here is a video I did recently of a COVER of Jack Johnson's "Better Together". The song itself spreads aloha and is and just makes everyone feel good when they hear it and sing it. The theme in the video are my boys and their friends having fun in hawaii and that they are better together! I am playing a Boulder Creek Riptide Baritone Ukulele.

This is how I spread the spirit of "aloha" with the uke. By jamming with complete strangers pulled from the audience. I like to think it's creative too as I've put together an entire medley using only two chords. It's easy for any beginner to play along.
Please excuse the swear in the first verse.

This is my entry for the Kanile’a/UU “Spread the Aloha” Ukulele Give-Away Contest.

I used my cover of Jake Shimabukuro's "Crosscurrent" as the backing track.

This took a while to film and just as long to edit, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I'd also like to thank my family for all their help.

*No Ukulele's were dropped/sratched/dinged in the process of making this video*

Watch in 480p and if you still cant see what the calendar says, it's "Spread aloha" every day.

Here comes my entry

I believe that it is possible to spread the aloha through instrumental music, so this
is my original composition that I composed especially for this contest.
It is entitled "The Aloha Waltz" - and it basicaly tells about dreams, that are called from
they hideouts by the midnight clock bell and start to dance in the moonlight. Then, suddenly,
with the first lights of morning sun they disappear.

I hope you will enjoy listening to this tune.

This is our original lighthearted entry into the “Spread the Aloha” contest. In order to get this you will need to read the lyrics below or on YT. Because we have such fun with the ukulele,
and with all of the positives included in the definition of aloha, we felt that humor just had to be in there. Our favorite entries have been the ones that made us laugh. Good luck everybody.

The Strum on Inn
Chords: C, Am, F, G7 Strum: DDUUD Picking pattern: In to 0ut C, E, G, A

I'm awfully tired of driving
A sign there up ahead
Says, "UKE could keep on going
Or stop in here instead!"

I went into the diner
And there up on the wall
A list of daily specials
And then I dropped my jaw

I gazed up with amusement
Mis-spellings -- more than few
Alfredo FRET-uccine?
And chicken CHORD-on bleu?

Beef STROKE-anoff with NOODLING
Or TUNE-a casserole
BBQ pork PULL-OFF
Or HAMMER-ON rye ROLL

BY EAR corn that's buttered
Or STRING beans almondine
Fresh PICK'd fruit pie ala-MODE
TREMELO jello cream

The thought of such concoctions
Delighted me for sure
An ukulele player
I could not ask for more

From everywhere they come here
Come here by the dozens
All strumming ukuleles
Uncles, aunts and cousins

So any time you're out there
Just wandering around
Bring in your ukulele
There're friends here to be found

STRUM on Inn
Where we meet
Hear the rhythm
Feel the beat

STRUM on Inn
Where we meet
All are welcome
Have a seat

STRUM on Inn
Where we meet
Listen up
Move your feet

STRUM on Inn
Where we meet
Play a-long
Sounds so sweet

haha I know xD
I'm also a new yorker and I went to robert moses beach,
and I asked people to write aloha in the sand so I could put pictures of that in the video
and EVERY SINGLE person I asked said no -___-

haha yup sounds totally familiar. I brought my uke to Jones Beach two weeks ago. Long Island beach-ers are just not ready to open up to the ukulele.

I even asked my mailman just to walk by the chalk a second time and look at it so we can get it on video and he just flat out said no!
I hope that doesnt hurt our chances that we couldnt get proof of people looking at the chalk on video haha.

P.S. How did you make your aloha shirt? Puff paints? It's amazing!

The shirts were just made with some fabric markers! They came out FANTASTIC even better than anticipated! which is good because each one took almost 2 hours to make! and my friend and I made 17!
well, if nothing else, those t-shirts will continue to spread the aloha in New York because my friends and I are definitely gonna keep wearing them!

so, I am brand new to uke, but I can't tell you how much I love it! I play piano, and uke feels like the perfect extension of what I try to express on that... hope that makes sense. Anyhoo, here is a song I am calling Someday. It came out of me within the first few minutes of me picking up an ukulele for the first time.
i hope you all enjoy the song, and great job on all the posts!!!!
thank you,

What is the ALOHA SPIRIT?

It can mean a lot of different things to different people. For me, the greatest aspects are SHARING, HELPING OTHERS, GRACE, KINDNESS, MERCY AND COMPASSION--all joined together with LOVE!

I hope you enjoy the video! I had a great time making it.

Thanks to Kanile'a 'Ukuleles and 'Ukulele Underground for this awesome contest!

I want to thank everyone who took part in making it real: the kids of the Greens, the Ames family, the Double Drive Thru Chick-Fil-A, the Petty family, and the Cabarrus County Library. You all helped inspire me to share the Aloha Spirit! :shaka:

Aloha!
I spread 'aloha' around Helsinki, Finland and made many people's (and bird's) sunny day even more fun! :)
This was such a fun project to film!
I found out about this competiton 4 days ago, so I didn't have time to compose my own music piece, so I decided to interpret Elvis' song.
If I win this, I'll probably give my old uke to a friend to spread even more aloha.

Here's my entry for the "Spread the Aloha" contest.

I don't think I understood "Aloha" when I first decided to enter this contest. In the process of making this video, I think I understand it better. It's being open to the possibilities with a positive attitude. Imagine what kind of world it would be if we all did that!

Good luck everybody! Aloha!

Here's my entry. An original song beginning with part of a popular lullaby. I had this idea at the beginning of the contest but could not complete it until after our vacation. We just got home this past Sunday and I've been working on it ever since. I "Spread the Aloha" all around our small town and up and down Virginia Beach. I taught everyone Frère Jacques, hence the name of my song. Plus frère means brother in french and we are all brothers and sisters on this earth. It has been so much fun doing this video and meeting all the different people, some of which I think will actually pick up playing the ukulele. I hope they will love it as much as I do. I for one am going to continue to introduce the ukulele to as many people as possible!

Aloha Ukulele Guys & Gals! in my humble opinion, there are few pursuits more noble than the desire to Spread the Spirit of ALOHA, so more power to y'all! : )

It's a little rough, but I hope my humble ukulele rendition of this Van Morrison classic about "Crazy Love" will help to further the cause and will do the song justice.

Here's my entry into the Ukulele Underground "Spread the Aloha" Contest. Aloha!! : )

This is my entry for the Kanile'a/UU "Spread the Aloha" Ukulele Contest. I would love to win this beautiful instrument, but my main purpose is to draw attention to the tragedy caused by Tropical Storm "AGATHA" to our friends in San Lucas Guatemala. Mudslides demolished some houses, and filled others with a several foot deep layer of mud. Some people died, buried in the mud or swept away by the deluge. There was also extensive flooding. Other houses are right in the line for further mudslides, and people have been forbidden to return to them. Please help San Lucas rebuild. For more information, go to: http://www.sanlucasmission.org/

My video shows our group with the people of San Lucas last August 2009 (before the mudslides), and since this past May 2010, after storm "AGATHA" devastated the town. "Aloha" -- love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathy, pity, kindness, sentiment, grace, charity, consideration -- please "Spread the Aloha" !

My playing is definitely better than my singing to I tried to up the vocals through my laptop and just decided to tweak them and the video itself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYmblkxU-UU

Here's my entry... unfortunately I was out of town most of the month and only was able to do this today... so when my audio started cutting in and out, I had to splice a bunch of clips together to cover the missing audio.
I play this song to calm my little girl down and we sing it at big family get togethers. I've just recently started playing uke and brought it to my family reunion last week and played with everyone in the evenings. To me, Aloha has a lot to do with family. Hope you like the video... its my first attempt and I'm super new to playing music.

Here's our last-minute entry. I just loaded it up to YouTube, so it might look fuzzy at first. My husband Brian wrote a song for this contest, and even learned to play the ukulele. It is a sing/ play-a-long, with lyrics and chord diagrams. Thanks for the inspiration. The edit is a little rougher than I hoped, and it's not perfect, but it is full of Ukulele Aloha!
Our video shoot was at a retired military station, once used as a watchtower for Los Angeles during the Cold War. It is now a public park.
