Hey UUers!

This month (July 2010) we are giving away 4 Eleuke ukuleles in the Eleuke "Uke Rock!" Video Contest!

To enter, here is what you need to do:
1. Make a video of yourself playing a Rock (or rock-related*) song on your ukulele. Be sure to mention the Eleuke "Uke Rock!" Contest somewhere in your video.
2. Upload your video to YouTube.
3. Submit it to this thread.

*Rock-related can mean almost anything. You can do a cover of a rock song, write an original rock song, take a rock song and cover it in a different style of music, take a song in a different genre of music and make it into a rock song, write a song about rock music ... etc. Be creative, use your imagination and rock out!

You may do collaborations or make videos accompanied by other people, as long as you are playing an ukulele in your video (and as long as you're willing to share your new Eleuke with the other people in your video, if you win).

One entry per contestant, deadline is July 31st, 2010.

Prizes:
1st place: Tenor solid-body Eleuke (http://www.eleukeusa.com/item/full-body-jazz-mp3-player-eleuke.html) with f-holes, headphone jack & mp3 jack (+soft case)
2nd place: Concert solid-body Eleuke (http://www.eleukeusa.com/item/pineapple-electric-uke.html) with pineapple design, headphone jack & mp3 jack (+soft case)
3rd place: Soprano Eleuke ukulele BCS-50E acoustic-electric with abalone inlays (+soft case)
4th place: Soprano Eleuke ukulele BS-30E acoustic-electric (+soft case)

Have fun & Good Luck!

that's the best attitude. especially the way the music industry has gone the past 20 years. the 'net has changed everything.
we musicians hold the reins of our journey more than ever, so the challenge now is in self-promotion and we right-brain thinkers have a hard time with such dynamics, but if you want to get anywhere musically now, you have to push the bus yourself, so to speak...
all the best!

I don't see a cable D:

exactly. Yes there were no cable
I was tryin to do that with my pickup, but then the sound just aint right.
I asked for my friend's gears, but he didn't let me borrow them.
So i recorded it with my samson co1u mic, edit the audio inside video, mix them into one vid
then taaddaaa....distortions.

Remember the commotion when Dylan went from acoustic folk to electric rock.
It had the purists diving under the bed, well I took a song from his acoustic period
called "Honey just allow me one more chance" and turned it for some inexplicable
reason into "Don't think twice" or a hybrid between the two songs.

But it is not Rock as we know it Jim!!! but it is my entry for the competition.

I think you just have to play a rock song or turn a non-rock song into a rock song... so you don't have to distort... even the hard core rockers go acoustic sometimes :P

My entry is "Well, You Needn't" by Thelonious Monk. No, it's not a rock song, and I'm not going to pretend that this is in any way a rock cover. However, the contest criteria seemed to be defined loosely enough to allow for, and maybe even encourage entries such as mine. And there's no doubt in my mind that this song would work extremely well on an Eleuke. But for now, it's just me, my uke, and Monk. Dig it, man.

Another bonus point winner for straight up uke, I reckon.

I think your wrong im affraid, The Eleuke is pushing the boundries and peoples conceptions of what the ukulele sound is. After all is is an Electric ukulele as top prize and it is a rock contest.

//EDIT

No offence to anyone who hasnt used effects. Im sure you have just as much chance of winning.
Just my opinion :)

And yes, the Intro and the verses are in a different key, but in my defense I had to make up the chords as I went along, resulting in dropped lyrics and some iffy sounding parts, but I had a bunch of fun making it. And if anyone's interested, the music in the beginning is called Goth by 615 Music, and it was made specifically for movie trailers.

Very cool. You just gave me a new song to strive to learn, I think ive even got it on Vinyl.

All week I've been playing Sweet Child of Mine thanks to CurtainGuy's fantastic tutorial - so much fun. Bet it sounds great on an eleuke!

So I tried to write a rock song on Bret to enter this competition. I found it really hard though (even though I love rock music!) so I'm not sure if this is "rocky" enough, but I thought "What the hey, might as well have a go!!"

The standard is so high it's very intimidating though!

Or click: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xjYA7LTI1U

As I say on the video blurb (if you don’t want to click through to YT) I decided to do a slowed-down laid back version and skiffle it up a bit. The Smurfulele is included because it was sent to me by a very kind UUer who shipped it all the way over to the UK out of kindness. MAHALO, sir :)

I also did some chunking on the rhythm uke part, which I thought was kind of appropriate as it was here on UU where Aldrine showed us how to do that.

This is a great contest – the entries are SO good. This one was such a good idea :)

Good luck to everyone,

Hey everybody!
Having some funny ideas in our minds, a friend of mine and me decided to enter this contest and make a video. So here's the result. What we did is, we took a rock song (Dammit by Blink 182), changed it into a minor key and made it a kind of rock ballad. Enjoy!

Before seeing this video, I was set on 6ster although there are lots of videos and songs I enjoyed from the list of entries.

This video has good sound quality, good video editing (except the ending kinda didn't work for me). A catchy tight tune with an excellent ukulele sound.

I liked it.

All these great entries. I wonder if I can come up with something before the deadline. I know I can't win but I enjoy watching all the people having fun makes it challenging to submit something just to do it.

The uke in the video is a cheap one I picked up in London and it's my very first uke. Although more like a toy, I sometimes manage to squeeze some decent sounds out of it.

Lots of love to my dear friends who helped me out with other instruments - Paul (drums), Przemek (bass), Ben (violin).

Our entry-ukulele cover and parody of
Cover of the Rolling Stone by
Captain Hook and the Medicine Show
lyrics by Shel Silverstein
http://www.alligatorboogaloo.com/uke/tabs/050327.html

As for "taking all kinda pills" that'd be Lipator, Crestor, Lovaza...

And our lyrics in the second verse:

We got a couple dozen friendly You Tube viewers
Encouraging us to play
We got the genuine Underground guru
Who's teaching us a better way!

We have practiced till our throats have gone dry
(We changed the first line of this verse to rhyme but it didn't make the video :(
Changed to: We have practiced long on this super silly song)
So we hope it's not a fluke
Though we will not be famous
We won't stop until they claim us
As the winners of an Eleuke!

Underground, gonna see our entry on the cover
'ground, gonna play ukulele for our brothers
'ground, gonna see our smiling faces
On the cover of the Underground!

That's the essence right there. You made it look easy. YOu made a whole empty room your larger sound hole.

This type of video can do nothing but encourage others such as myself to try songs such as from a master like Santana

2 or 3 more days to try and get my entry in. I had to scrap any rock cover song ideas and am looking to improvise an easy classic. I had something sound good last night. We'll see if I'm ready today to put it on video or record it on the Zoom.

I find these contests are great motivators to get things done.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I discovered this contest about a week or two after I bought my Makala MK-C, my first ukulele. Since then, I have learned how to make tabs, read tabs, play ukulele reading standard music notation, sing, record and edit audio as well as video. So basically this contest has motivated me to become a better musician and learn new skills. This contest was really a blast, I had so much fun. Here's my entry:

This video is a collaboration between myself, Sam Wonder and Dave Pike, my incredible musician friend.

Together, we perform one of Lenny Kravitz's most successful songs to date. The song earned Kravtiz a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Male Rock Performance and we hope it will bring us the same success in this competition.

This is my first introduction to the ukulele world and youtube. I look forward to hopefully recording more videos for you.

If you would like to stay in touch, you can find me on
www.facebook.com/mrsamwonder or subscribe to my Youtube page.

Be sure to also check out Dave's Youtube page at www.youtube.com/middlez1969. He rocks!

Peace, Love and Ukulele,

Daaaaaaaamn! You made this song sound SICK from beginning to end! I especially enjoyed it because you didn't need to use anything else (lyrics, any effects, electric guitar, etc.) but just used the UKULELE to kill this song. It was original and awesome and you did a great job! :D

Oh...and the video is awesome, too, btw. Loved it!

Very cool. You just gave me a new song to strive to learn, I think ive even got it on Vinyl.

The main riff is pretty easy to play (otherwise you wouldn't see me playing it :), but I can tell there are improvisational possibilities that I can only hope to touch someday.

So many great entries in this contest! I should bow out now, but who knows? And if nothing else, I'd be happy if my entry helped introduce Monk to more people.

Uke! It's a lifestyle!

This is my Eleuke Rock/ Ukulele Underground entry.

Hey there. I am a home grown local boy who just re-discovered the uke. One of my earliest memory is my uncle playing the ukulele at the beach 42 years ago but I have only played for about 5 months.......it is in my blood.

I am teaching my daughter now and she is a natural.

Sorry for the rough vocals. I sing ugly. This is unplugged, raw and back to basic rock and roll. First video, please give feedback.

Love all uke addicts,

First video. about 5 minutes continuous raw playing and singing after 5 months is great. Decent filler. Funny verses. That line about blowing you money and popping pills from a pez dispenser made me laugh.

Is that an original song? If so, kudos and big props.

I'd say the content was just about right. Not underdone, not overcooked. You kept the effects just about right.

I'm thinking you should feel proud of that. I say that because I am like you, a late bloomer to learning music and a recent uke wannabe. I'd be happy with that.

here's my entry (and first ever YouTube video!). It's a cover of Bachman Turner Overdrive's Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet. A truly rocking song that I think would sounds great on an Eleuke. I couldn't find any other uke covers of it so I hope I do it justice!

About a month ago I bought an Eleuke Rosewood concert (which I absolutely love btw) & a Zoom G1XN guitar pedal. My friend, Mojo Lomax had just bought his first bass and drum kit (having no previous musical knowlage btw). The same day I received my Eleuke this contest was announced. What are the chances of that happening? Needless to say we put our heads together and came up with this. It's been one of the most fun projects so far and my first online colaboration. Hope you likes it.

Yes, a great song that is a power chord anthem of rock and roll defiance. As I am new, I was trying to emulate the power chord effect of that original song; but, your strum pattern is just as good really. The eleuke is great with a Line6 pocket pod or amp with effects to get close to that song's sound; but, your uke style gave it a fresh twist. Thanks for that. I have much to learn.

sweet. I like this submission top to bottom. I bought my eleuke at about the same time you did. I thought there'd be more submissions with eleuke because I am like you. WHen you plug it into and effects pedal, it becomes a serious electronic guitar like instrument - one I struggle to try and maintain that ukulele sound with. I'm glad you posted eleuke representation.

Here is my entry for The Eleuke "Uke Rock!" Ukulele Give-Away Contest (at UkuleleUnderground.com). I chose "You Don't Love Me" by The Allman Brothers Band (cover) and was joined by my friend and guitar teacher (he calls my ukulele "that little guitar") Scott Munsell. My video is on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JZbedn85Is

I started guitar lessons when my teenage son did about a year ago ... I fell in love with the ukulele when I heard Ingrid Michaelson and a few others using it in their recordings. I am new at the "lead guitar" riffs, but had a good time trying it on my uke. Let me know what you think! :-)

i am waiting for my video to compile but I thought I'd state that rock and roll back in the day came in vinyl. When you bought your record, you got a free work of art on the album cover. That was every much a part of rock and roll - the album covers. You would stare and study the album cover as you listened to the music.

Here is my test "album cover"

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz18/Frankdom/ukeeleukeHAPPYHANGOVER.jpg

Ok, now the raw video. I am only a beginner at 4 weeks of learning uke and I just wanted to use this competition to focus me on something to improve my skills. I know I don't stand a chance to win with all the other talent; so that is the reason I didn't edit or make the video pretty. haha. Just posting this is relieving.

What?! That was fantastic!

Here's my entry. A multi-track ukulele cover of Aerosmith's Dream On. I just finished this two hours before deadline then my comptuer crashed. I lost the file. I restarted the computer but it was still missing. I had spent all week day and night on this thing. I had been backing up and saving like you're supposed to and the file was still missing. Then, I restarted the computer again and long after I had given up, I find the file again. A precious hour had gone by. Quickly, I got the thing exported out of Final Cut Express and then onto Youtube.

Anyways, hope you enjoy this. I spent the better part of my summer break working on it.

I just listened to my video and I'm happy with most of it but there's some weirdness that happened when I uploaded it to Youtube. There's about 10 seconds of it where an extra sound creeps into it, kind of a dissonant feeling. LIke a ghost that showed up after processing. Maybe that's just the way rock music is. hahaha

Good luck everyone. I'll have fun catching up on on the entries tomorrow.

In my opinion, tt doesn't matter the video. It matters on the player and how you played the song. Everyone here did a superb job musically, and to me, that is what matters. If you rocked out, had a great time doing it, then that an accomplishment in itself. Good luck to everyone.

I wouldn't worry about that. I know I used this contest to motivate me to improve my video skills. However, it was always in the interest of serving the music. Some songs are better delivered with one simple shot. I think it depends on the song and you, the performer, and what it is you're trying to capture.

I think that it's very important for all of us to accept the result when it comes out, no matter what you think about it.

We all agree that it is a seriously tight competition. There are so many good entries, and all contestants have different
styles and strengths. Which means, judges' personal preferences might affect the result in a way that not all of
us agree.

But it completely ruins fun of the contest when people start bitching about the results and disapproving the winners.
(well we saw it happened on "spread aloha" competition and it sucked...) and it's really not nice to the sponsor
who is generously giving out FOUR ukes.

I don't mean to be preachy or anything, but I got just worried, because it is a tight competition and
we all have different skills.

Well... peace!

I don't mean to be preachy or anything, but I got just worried, because it is a tight competition and
we all have different skills.

Well... peace!

This is well said!! And remember, wasn't it fun just to do the video. Winning is great, sure.. who doesn't want to win? But, I think the real value of this contest was it got those who entered to make some really fine music. It was a joyous, hard, grueling, and exciting task, making the video. I learned so much that will benefit me over the next year, at least. It was equally rewarding watching all the contest entries and looking at the variety of approaches out there. I've earmarked some of the entries for further viewing once the contest is over. I want to learn from what others did.

Now, off my soapbox. Nothing rocks as hard as ukuleles played by talented ukers.

Amen. I didn't have the means for super dooper video editing, besides the intro, which took much longer than I would have hoped, but I still had fun simply playing.

Hey there,

Let put this in perspective, there are very few things in life that you enjoy EVERY time you do it. Playing ukulele is one of them. I can't think of one time I had a bad uke session....including entering into this contest.

You can't say that about many other things......including golf, going to the beach, hanging out with family and friends, lunch, vacation, shopping, etc, etc. All of these things occasionally are bad. Playing uke is always a celebration!

Aloha all.

Have to agree with everyone about how this was a really fun thing to do. Had a great time not just in the making the video for the contest, but also watching everyone else's videos. Kudos to everyone who entered!

Hi Everyone,
Sorry for the delay, but we're having a massive debate about the entries that will most likely only end in a cage match or pillow fight... or a pillow fight in a cage... anywho... we're still debating and this is a very tough call. We should have winners announced soon-ish (like some time next week)

While you're waiting, hit us up on Facebook and let us know what you're up to... or you could bake a cake. I really like cake.

I do not envy you guys, haha, must be a super dooper tough call. If I could bake, I'd bake you all a cake, but I can't cook to save my life. Let us know how that pillow fight in a cage goes. Cheers!

Where can I send that cake to Mr Eleuke man? You must be sooooooo tired and hungry trying to make this decision. Please do not see my kindness as a persuading factor or bribe!!! :p

All the best with the decision.

I'm imagining scenes from Twelve Angry Men, but with menacing, in-your-face pillows.

Well, if you got #9, that's still pretty good.

I don't have a feeling. I have a knowing that I didnt make any cut; but, it takes some large cajones to enter just for the experience.

Maybe... just maybe, they'll have a random drawing for all the other entrants outside the final 8.

maybe.

maybe

maybe.
