Uke Minutes 17 - Movable Chord Shapes

Rad, I've been wondering about movable chords. So how do you figure out what the root note is for the chord? Like with guitar, it's always either the 5th or the 6th string, depending on the chord shape you're using—is it similar with uke?

I think it depends on what chord shape you are using. For example on the Major and Minor chord shape diagram:

DIAGRAM!

For the first Major shape (top left), the root note is the G-string. For the second major shape (top center), the root note is the E-string. For the third major shape (top right), it's the C-string.

For the Minors, the first shape (bottom left) is the E-string. For the second (bottom center) it's the C-string, and for the third minor shape (bottom right) the root note is the A-String.

So I guess it just depends on the shape.

That was a great Uke Minute! Awesome job, guys.

And to quote the last paragraph from that site:
Have fun with this. After all, that's why you're playing the uke – to have fun! Incorporate some of the second-position and third-position chords into your playing. It'll add a new dimension to the sound that you get from your instrument, it'll look way cool, it'll impress your friends, it'll bring attractive members of the opposite sex into your life, it'll cure acne and hair loss, it'll make you live longer.

Nice uke minutes! I remember when I first learned about movable chords. Really handy :D

ya it is. i learned them when i started to learn the guitar about a year ago. and when you finally get the idea of it, it seems so simple to understand.

I know about movable chords (Rich plays them some), I've just avoided them because I can't do barre chords. :(
Instead I either transpose songs to another key, or if someone else is the singer, I use a capo.

This Uke Minutes is probably just the kick in the a** I need to start working on them.

Thanks for doing this one, Aldrine (I think)...

Nice Vid. I've been waiting on this one. Mahalo

Great video! :nana: Big thanks to the UU team for all your hard work!

Best "Uke Minute" yet! Thank you!

This makes me extremely happy! I'd covered it in a workshop over the summer but it didn't completely connect. Now I can wrap my brain around it. Sometimes it takes a couple of approaches to get a thing and this has really helped. Muchas Gracias!

I can tell this info above is maybe the KEY to unlocking the universe of music that could spill effortlessly out of my little uke...BUT...my head hurts!:eek::eek:
