I know some "serious" woodworkers who scoff at these machines but I've had one for almost 30 years and love it. Mine is one of the original models (10 ER) that does not have the variable speed headstock. I have found it to be very versatile and capable of accurate work. It is my only lathe and I find myself using it in other modes even though I have a complete compliment of stand-alone machines. Inspired by Timbuck's shopmade thickness sander post of a few months ago, I am currently making a 16" drum sander that will mount on (and be driven by) the Shopsmith. I'll post some pictures when it is complete.

Had one once but gave it away to another aspiring uke builder (I'd picked it up free as well). I like stand-alone tools and it was just too big for my shop/garage.
