The hot knife

How can you tell when you have successfully removed all the lacquer?

Good for you for posting the video Pete, but I'm not a fan. You can never get all the lacquer off with this method. If anything the hot knife is working lacquer back into the wood. It's got to be finished up with scraping or some other method of getting down to bare wood (and past the pore filler as well).

You're right Chuck - scraping back is the 2nd part of this operation and the bit I didn't show - I finish off with a 3/8" chisel. Despite this, I find that this method is much cleaner and less stressful - especially if I have allowed the lacquer to become too brittle as can happen :)

Not to miss the point or anything, but what's the song playing in the video?

Because some cellulose lacquers can be brittle and will crack around the mask joint. You also have problems when it comes to polishing out with a masked area creating a miniscus. believe me, i've tried all ways and this is the 'easiest' for me - not for everyone, just me :)
