restringing republic uke

Can anyone tell me how to restring a Republic reso uke? The end of the string disappears down into a hole and I can't figure it out.

As I recall, you have to tie a knot in one end of the string, drop in into the hole and snag the knot on the lip of the metal flange before pulling it tight. I tied a small glass bead onto the ends to make it a bit easier to get a good grip (pictures on my web site).
