wowowee, soo many uke giveaways/contests. O_O UU is filled with a whole lot of awesome smothered with a ton of amazing. ;) haha wow, I'm hungry. but anywho.

Question, is there a rule or something that if you've won a uke from a previous contest then you can't win any new contests? haha

I'm just wondering before I start trying for any. xP

06-14-2008, 05:05 PM
hey, i'm pretty much a lurker here - my first post was to enter that first giveaway - but i just wanted to boast that my wife has bought me one of MGM's Kalas, the spalted maple tenor cutaway, for my birthday (HB to me, yay!). It's supposed to be delivered Monday, so needless to say I will be totally distracted at work all day.

I'm a total novice uker, but I'll try to post a little report about it after I have a chance to fondle, I mean, play it. It looks awesome in the pictures though.

Dealing with Mike has been a pleasure.

Marmite and Vegemite are as similar as marmalade and jam (jelly) or Bananas and Plantains or concerts and sopranos, similar but definatly different. I am lucky enough to have both. My wife has marmite and Jam sandwiches, sometimes with added peanut butter....

....but more importantly what's all this about elbow grease? Hard work? do we have to build all terrain ukes and face a series of off road tasks?

marmite? never heard of it, probably a rip off of vegemite.. although i don't like the taste of it... only every now and again.

Marmite is the British version (and there's a New Zealand Marmite too). I've tried the others, but do like Vegemite best. It's definitely an acquired taste though. I love sharing it with my American friends and watching their faces when they first try it :D

That sounds a bit more like Bovril. Nice with some salt and pepper and a tiny bit of butter. Bovril went vegan during the BSE and Madcow crises in Britain but now its back to being boiled up cows.

Marmite are doing a celebratory Champagne and Marmite limited edition at the moment, very nice if you like Marmite.

I am not sure there is much left to say about malt extract based condiments.

Do you non-nut allergy sufferers prefer Crunchy or Smooth peanut butter? (just while we wait)

AAAh! clotted cream! It is not cheesey at all, just creamy, try to get the Cornish stuff of course, I'm not sure waht they do to it in Devon but I try not to touch it. Try a dollop on a plain vanilla icecream cone...or with syrup on a scone...or on fresh strawberries...or with warm apple pie...or at Christmas time the locals here flip the top off a mince pie and drop some in with brandy butter and.....I could do this all day

Anyway the rumour is Eleuke

Clotted cream is just cream. Very very thick, very very rich. You can slice it - it has consistency of butter that's ready to spread and it tastes like 10,000 angels playing ukulele on a sun-kissed cloud. The best is made by Rhodda's and while it's made in Cornwall (the pig's leg part of the UK, right at the end) it's available online. It doesn't keep.

It's sublime on a warm scone with jam.

Eleuke sounds like a great prize, I have been reaading reviews of them recently and they seem popular.

Any word on what the competition is yet?

Jack33

PS

Bangers and mash (posh version)
Serves 4
Ready in 50 minutes

Ingredients
1 tbsp vegetable oil
8 pork and herb sausages
700g floury potatoes
2 Cox's apples
1 red onion, sliced
2 tsp flour
150ml red wine
1 tsp wholegrain mustard
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
50g butter
50ml milk

1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a high heat and add the sausages. Cook for 15 minutes, turning to brown all over. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into even chunks and put into a large pan of cold salted water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes, or until tender.
2. Core the apples and cut into wedges. Push the sausages to the edge of the pan and add the apple wedges. Cook for about 2 minutes each side, until turning golden. Remove the apple with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Add the onion to the pan and cook, stirring, for 6-8 minutes, until softened. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, then gradually add the wine, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Pour in 120ml hot water and allow to bubble for a few minutes to thicken the gravy. Return the apple to the pan and season.
3. Drain the potatoes, then put them back in the same pan and return to the heat for about 30 seconds to drive off any excess moisture. Mash well with the butter and milk, and season. Divide the mash between 4 plates and top with the bangers. Spoon over the mustard gravy and apple wedges. Serve with garden peas.

I got my Eleuke in the mail yesterday, and it's already a great investment. I played at one in the morning, in my bedroom, with its paper-thin walls, and didn't disturb any of the roommates.

It's a great thing. It sounds pretty nice amped up, too-- It favors the midrange a bit, same as my Ovation used too, but I'm starting to think that's just an issue that active pickups have...

I'm going to get so much more practice with this instrument, being able to play any time of the day, and not needing to feel self-conscious.
