Ever noticed the difference in tone pending on where you strum or pluck the ukulele strings?
Through simple experimentation I find that this is due to the taughtness of the string, "that is, how tight the string is" when you pluck it. If you pluck the a string right next to the bridge one can procure a staccato sound similar to playing with a pick. This is because the string has less room to vibrate. If you pluck a string right over the 12th string "halfway mark for a string from saddle to bridge" one can procure a mellow laggato sound that resonates for a long time. This is because the string has plenty of room to vibrate to its fullest.
It's lots of fun to diddle with this effect for solo's and keeping time alike!
Have a blast.
