This soprano uke is solid mahogany, 21 3/4 inches tip-to-base, with a slightly rounded back, rosewood fretboard, and hand-inlaid MOP fret markers. The bridge is custom-carved, and is held in place by both glue and wooden dowels. The nut is the only part of the instrument that is not original, and is hand-fitted pine. The condition is great, no cracks or disfigurations, and the wood is smooth and clean. The bridge was recently reglued, and it has been restrung with brand new Aquila nylgut strings.
The uke was made in 1927 as a Christmas gift for a young girl, by a Hawaiian maker (initials LD) resettled in the US. It seems to have been made entirely from mainland materials. The uke is hawaiian style, and plays classically, with just a touch of home-brew flair. If I can I will have a video sample posted shortly.
This is as much a collector's uke as it is a player's, and unfortunately I'm neither (as least as far as soprano ukes go...). So I'm offering it for sale or trade. The going price is negotiable, as I haven't yet found an appraiser who is able to give me anything more than a ballpark estimate of $350-$550. As far as trades are concerned, I'm looking for tenor ukes by reputable maker in very good condition, with certain exceptions (I love Bluegrass Ukulele's cigar box ukes).
I'm also giving priority to any UUers who live in and around NYC and can meet me in person to see this uke. Please follow the link to my last thread for tons of additional pics.
