I paint some Mahalos for fun; but, I'm not a good painter.

I was wondering about doing sticker designs onto a cheap uke based on a theme.

My original thoughts were Calvin and Hobbes or Hello Kitty. Calvin and Hobbes for me and Hello Kitty for 2 little girls of a friend who I know would go absolutely nuts on a hello kitty uke.

SO........ I'm glad you posted this. I didn't want to profess wanting to put Hello Kitty on a uke without proper approval.

$850 really not asking too much for a handmade solid wood limited edition 'ukulele. Allot of Japanese seem to like to collect things and have disposable incomes. I bet they sell out the the 400 pieces in no time flat, and they double in value.

Hello Kitty is global. THere is sooo much stuff sold with that theme.

I like that little pic of Kitty with the uke.

As a kitty fan, what base color is best for a kitty uke theme? I ask this because I want those girls to have maximum jaw drop and as a guy, I don't want to mistakenly put Hello Kitty on a Black ukulele.

Is it solid wood? What kind of wood is it made of? I haven't found any serious or detailed info about it... :)

I think it really can go any way, depending on how you paint her. I think the black Stratocaster Fender with Hello Kitty is pretty freaking sweet myself. ;)

Pink is the obvious choice, and will almost always get a Kitty fan's attention. I think an apple green uke, with the Hello Kitty holding a red apple would look awesome.

I've thought about getting a pink Dolphin and putting some "Hello Kitty"stickers on it to see if my wife would play it. She is NUTS for H.K., even at 44 years old. She and her sister and a couple of friends hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon a few years ago. It was the "Team Hello Kitty Death March", and they had pink T-shirts with Hello Kitty with "X X"s for eyes. It was very funny. She has sewn a Hello Kitty patch onto a pink bike jersey, and has a Hello Kitty sticker on the rear fender of her (very nice) road bike. When we ride our tandem, she says "THKMU" which is code for "Team Hello Kitty, Mount Up!". She is insane.
I have to admit, though... it is a really freaking cute design, from a design standpoint. Some graphic artist was a GENIUS.

Aloha bunnyflower,

I'm not sure why the company chose to do a limited edition with this particular model and in all honesty it looks a bit funky with that kitty cutout soundhole. That being said, however, I played one of these ukes just the other week and the construction of the instrument is done very well (then again, anything made in Japan is meticulously crafted). The surprising thing was how good this uke played and sounded. I couldn't get over how well the uke projected and kept its sustain as well. The clarity was wonderful and the set up was perfect too. Intonation was on the mark as well.

best,
Shawn

I bought a pink dolphin from MGM and did this. Could not find large stickers so I cut her image out of a gift bag and glued it. I actually made two, one for me and my sister. The third pic is one I did with lettering sticker. It's the name of the band I'm in.

Neeeeato! Are you located in Japan? How did you get the opportunity to play with one of these? Could you tell if it was solid wood, or have any idea what kind of wood it was? I am happy to hear that it sounds so nice. It'd be a shame if it was so pretty, and didn't sound pretty.

Great job with the Makala modification.

I know a 5 year old who is having a birthday soon and I was looking to do the same thing after getting the inspiration from the OP. Finding an actual plastic Hello Kitty uke would be great; but having a functional uke is likely more important.

Use a Hello Kitty paper clip and your soundhole can look like you spent $800 on trendy commericalism.

Aloha Bunnyflower,
I have reserverations on this one....on that point, paying that much for a uke that a company I've never heard of is hard to swallow...
besides the lesser known company factor, it would be risky taking a chance for that amount of money purely on asthetics...when you
can get a awesome Kamaka sopano for $650.00 and have and artist paint one or go to a printing shop and make a decal..and probally
still be far below $850.00. Sorry but that's the logical side of me thinking....Another thing, what if it sounds terrible...remember it's
un known company, at least by me... but if I was rich, and $850.00 was pocket change that would be another story...but I'm
not rich, so I gotta buy wisely.....Sorry to burst your Hello Kitty bubble...Good Luck whatever you do!! and Have Fun.... MM Stan...

Oh, I don't have that kind of cash to drop on a uke right now, but, I was mostly curious if anyone else had heard of this uke, because I'd like more actual information about it... All it appears anyone seems to have are pictures of it with zero description. For example, I'd really like to know what kind of wood is it made of, etc. I think that would help in figuring out if it really is worth that astronomical price, or, if it's just priced high because it's a "cool novelty item," like those adorable brightly-colored plastic Japanese ukes.

I am Fender guitar fan, mostly Telecasters, but I do have a pink Hello Kitty Stratocaster under their Squier brand. It has pink fretmarkers and a Hello Kitty pickguard. On back, the body has the Hello Kitty logo. It plays decently, but I don't air it out much. It was more for the potential collectability than a real player guitar. But I digress....

The uke looks CooL but I don't think I'd spend the $799 to acquire it. Too many other nice ukes in the same price range. JMO....

Aloha Bunny,
I think on this ukulele you're paying the Hello Kitty name...Name branding, such as gucchi(I don't even know how to spell that)or LV(don't know how to spell that either).he he
You just gotta be careful when buying these big name products...on quality issues...especially if buying sight unseen..."Buyer Beware" can't stress that enough...

I've actually played both those Hello Kitty ukes, the cheap pink one at the Sanrio store in NYC and the fancy solid-top in a music store in Japan. The pink one is, if you can believe it, worse than a Mahalo. Much worse. The solid-top is pretty nice. If I were to put a price tag on it, I'd say $150, maximum. The other $700 going towards a cat shaped soundhole.

In other words, get the uke you want, slap on a Hello Kitty sticker or cut ears into your soundhole with a jigsaw and you'll be much happier with your purchase.

I would suggest you get a nice Makala Dolphin, so many good colors to choose from there, and get some ink jet map paper, and print out whatever graphics you like for your uke. I suggest ink jet map paper, because it is tough (almost like plastic) and makes the printout waterproof. Then I would rubber cement it to the ukulele, and instant novelty uke!! http://www.waterproof-paper.com/inkjet-paper.shtml It is also great for printing out chord charts

We have just gotten in 2 of the Hello Kitty Vox Ukulele's! There are 2 models. One is solid mahogany and one is solid koa. They are both beautifully made and play like a dream.....and cute as a button, I might add. The mahog has the Hello Kitty soundhole inlaid with abalone and a red bow and the koa has her inlaid with different exotic woods. There were only 3 brought into Canada and we have 2 of them. They both come with custom embroidered bags...the Koa one has a deluxe bag. The serial numbers on both are under the 100 mark. You can call me at 519-940-4810, if you have any more questions.

Yes, there are some, though the ones I've seen are cheap one-step-up-from-toy quality. A guy I work with is always looking for cheap guitars on Craig's list so I send him a link each time I see a hello kitty or hannah montana guitar. He is not amused - maybe because I've been doing it for about three years now...

These look like nice ukes that have been...been...oh the humanity! What a terrible thing to do to an otherwise nice instrument... LOL

This one has 400 made vs. the previous Koa which had 100 made.

I am trying to convince my wife she needs it. Actually because I bought some other stuff. Long story.

Wish me luck
