Is it because my strings are too high off the fretboard? It hurts every time I press down a chord to play.

Thanks!

Your action does look rather high. How long have you been playing?

Aloha Whysosrs,
Your action seems rather high,,you can take it to the music shop for a good set up and get it fixed....maybe lower tension thinner strings too..Aquilla's
from the picture, can't tell too good...Good Luck!! MM Stan...

When you're just starting out, expect some discomfort before your calluses form. But yeah, that action is way high.

When I first started to make plinking noises with the uke I started a thread with the same title for me it got worse then it got better just got to toughen up the finger tips

From the pics, the action looks really high and it could use a set-up, but yeah, what they said. Next week, you will have calluses and it will all go away.
Also gotta agree with MMSTAN, get the Aquilas. Looks like a laminate Uke and they will make it sing, and those defilement strings are rough on the fingers.
