Hello Fellow Uke Enthusiasts!
The Ukulady here. I'm interested in doing a tour of Australia & New Zealand Ukulele festivals and am seeking information on the Hot Down Under Uke Scoop! What's the meep down there? All info/advice and such on global Ukulele festivals is appreciated...

Gidday

This is the only "festival" I know of here in Aotearoa.

Basically it's called the "New Zealand" Ukulele Festival because they were they first to call themselves that. I'm told it's fun.

There have been one or two other gatherings but I can't find any records of them
We're trying to find time to get something up and running here in Nelson. Just gotta find the time and motivation.

If anyone knows what's what in New Zealand it's these fellas.

Hope that helps. Come by when you're here and we'll buy you a drink...;-)

Well there are a number of Ukulele Festivals in Australia:

The 29th January is the Blue Mountains Ukulele Festival http://bluemuc.ning.com/

The 25th February is the Melbourne Ukulele Festival http://www.muk.com.au/

July 2011 will see the Cairns Ukulele Festival http://cairnsukulelefestival.net

on Facebook, have a gander at The Wellington Ukulele Collective. I can't link you because I'm currently at work where all the fun on the internet is blocked (apart from UU, thank the IT gods). If you're quick, they're doing a workshop + open mic this Sunday at the Wellington Botanic Gardens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_Botanic_Gardens) Soundshell (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nlNKF5iBoxp6nzWaoGt59g) ;) And they do a meetup every Sunday... Also add Kiwi Ukulele, he tends to update on the happenings around the country as well as his own workshops.

Hawkes Bay/Napier seems to have a thriving uke movement going, as well as Christchurch (Canterbury Uni), though they'll probably be a little pre-occupied with all the aftershocks from the big 7.1 quake they had...

Now that's just annoying... the same day as UOGB in Wellington... I wonder... maybe I could fly up in the morning, attend, fly back and still have time to get ready for some UOGB awesomeness... though that is a lot of ukulele for one day

/edit: Just checked flight pricing, Jetstar's pretty much the only option. And for the most suitable flight times it's $250. Plus expensive taxi to and from, because we all know that Auckland's public transport sucks...

My undertsanding is that 15 hours straight is the medically recommended maximum ...
