I recently purchased a Mainland Tenor. I replaced the high G string with a wound low G string. My problem now is I get this annoying "twang" when I strum with my nail. I have tried strumming all open strings to rule out fretting issues and I still observe the sound. However, whenever I use the the meaty part of my thumb, I get a beautiful "jazzy" sound that I prefer. Is this a characteristic of wound strings or am I doing something wrong? Any help appreciated.

Jack,

I'm fairly sure the only reason its doing that is because of the wound string. If you can strum through the open strings without that noise then the g string is probably seated correctly. It takes a little time getting used to the wound string. Some never adjust to it and go to non-wound low g strings. Its a little floppier than the wound but you'll get used to it.

I think it's just that you aren't used to the different tension associated with low wound strings. Maybe try to get in the habit of plucking it lighter.
