The former is a simple strum. The start of each bar shows the position of the fingers, and then along the bottom, how to strum it.

The latter is a picking / strumming piece, but it works in the same way. You dont strum all the strings though - you just pick or strum those that are numbered (the numbers meaning which frets to hold for that pick or strum)

At the beginning you are holding the C string at the 6th, and the E string at the 5th and plucking them together. The next is both those two strings at the 2nd (plucked together), then the GC and E strings at the 2nd played together followed by the A string plucked open, then plucked at the 2nd
