Ukulele Strings?

What are ukulele strings are the best? The white strings, Black strings, are clear strings?

Erm - this is a huge subject, and the colour of the strings is not really the issue - you need to think about the brand.

Its also very subjective, and depends on the uke you are playing.

Give us a little more info - what sort of uke do you want to restring?

For each uke I play I go through a range of strings to find ones I like for that uke.

My conclusions

Dolphin - Aquilas (which are white!)
Mainland Mahogany - Martin flourcarbons (which are clear)
Fluke - Worth Clear Mediums
Flea - Worth brown mediums

Actually, there is no best and it really comes down to personal preference. Your best bet would be to try different string sets like Aquila, Worth, D'Addario, Fremont, Hilo, Ko'olau and so on. Since you didn't mention the brand name and model of your uke, I just threw in the names of different string manufacturers . . . Well I'm getting a new ukulele and I'm just going to restring it to which one is preffered best. The white strings feel very tough while the black strings stretchy and more bendy. I'm not concerned about the brand so much just the type of string.

Personal preference. I like the sound of Hilo strings but they are black and really tough to see against the fret board. I like the singing zing of Aquilas though they're a little "hot" on my boisterous Mele pineapple soprano. Tried Kala reds the other day... not for me. Just tried out Martin M600's... very impressed! Strings are relatively cheap. Try 'em all... you'll find the right set for you.

Arashi - you are missing the point though - different manufacturers make different coloured strings, and some make more than one colour - its not about the colour though, its about the feel and the tone

Tight strings you are referring to may well be Aquilas - they may feel tight, but on a cheaper uke most people agree they are about the best you can buy

Hilo black strings are slippy and bendy, but to my ear are pretty awful sounding. In the same way, Martin flouros are clear and bendy but sound great on the right instrument

There is therefore no right and wrong answer, but your decision shouldnt really be based on colour

WHat new uke are you buying - there may be other players on here that have the same uke and can share their opinions with you. There is no right and wrong, good or bad string though, depends on your ears and your uke
