I got mine at home depot. I had to go thru a whole unit but found two really nice 2x4s that I cut brace material from. I cut it in 24 inch pieces, split with a chisel, jointed flat then sawed with the band saw.

I like Aircraft Spruce. They'll sell you a bargain box of QS for $37.50 that'll take you years to get through.

It's like people are reading my mind... thanks for the links guys. I'm not going to say what I've been paying for my brace wood... it's very very nice stuff but I think I'm gonna keep it for special builds from now on.

Fahrner, doesn't the Santa Cruz Uke Club build a giant uke each to burn at the Burning Uke Festival? Those frets might even fit such an uke!
Next time I order from Aircraft Spruce I gotta get an eight foot length of that stuff just to have in the shop. Maybe paint it silver. Just too cool.

+1 to Bruce (Spruce) at Orcas Island
I love his Spruce billet violin "rejects" - all of the offcuts become bracing material. You can even hand split them if you want, talk about no runout. . .

I always get a lot more than I expect. Included with each bundle will probably be several lengths that are wide enough to resaw for tops, if that's your thing.

For builders over this side of the pond....There is an Aircraft timber supplier in the UK at Swindon... They offer timber in spuce and Duglas fir, cut to whatever sizes you want...Maybe they will sell offcuts as well??

Yes, they do. Think the event is typically in September.
