So I figured that it is time that Normal, IL got a uke club together. I will be at The Coffee house in Normal this Wednesday (November 17) at 7pm if you would like to come.
We do not have an official name or what we are going to do yet, but I figured we meet, play, and talk and see if it should be a thing.
Bring Uke if you have one, and some copies of songs you like to play (5 would be good)
informal, no pressure to play.
Hope to see people there.

Unfortunately with the holiday season, I'm pretty booked up with family obligations and after that the weather may be prohibitive but I'll keep it in mind if you keep it up.

I'm thinking about your meeting. My problem is you are almost three hours away from me.
But I'm thinking about it.
Anyhow how was the turn out for this meeting?

Hey sorry I missed this (you shoulda emailed me) but I'd be willing to help get this going depending on scheduling. Wednesday is not a good night for me because that's rehearsal night for my church band. What skill level does one need to have to hang with you guys? can I bring my ubass and tenor? Will this be a family friendly setting? etc.....

Did my no-good niece show up for this? I told her about it. She's at ISU for chrisssake.

Did my no-good niece show up for this? I told her about it. She's at ISU for chrisssake.
Yes she did. It was funny, since I gave such short motice only one person showed up, then she walks in and sits down. I thought it was the other persons friend and she thought she was my friend. I was delighted that someone I did not know showed up, and she had a ton of music.
thank you for telling her.

So for the next meeting would Sunday December 12 or the 19th work? Afternoon at the Coffee house in Uptown Normal?
I know CHUG is talking about December 11 for theirs, and I want to go to that.
Another idea could be to carpool to CHUG and call that a "meeting"?
Any input is welcome

A couple of us started a Uke Club in Iowa City about 4 years ago. It started out real small (at times only two folks) and stayed that way for quite awhile. Then we started to meet at our Public Library on one Sunday a month, and got some good walk by traffic from that, plus the local papers have covered us a few times, which helped a lot in bringing in people. It has grown since. We can get 12 to 18 per month attending and have around 35 active members on our mailing list. (IC is such a transient town, being a college town, that we'll get people for awhile, then they move on, so that limits sustainable growth a little) But, overall, we're happy with our situation here. Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you in your effort. I believe if you stick with it, it will take off in due time. Congratulations!

So, Lets try this again!!
This time with spirit. Well...Christmas spirit atleast
I asked the coffee House in Normal if it is cool to meet there, and they think so. otherwise I will find somewhere else near by.
We can play whatever but figured it would be fun to play some x-mas tunes, but not required, bring what you like. Bring 5 or so copies of songs you would like to play/sing
Here is the thread of holiday music:

Thanks, it is really hard to say "lets do this again" when 2 others show up. If anything I feel that if I keep setting up meetings that it will get bigger and better. If it doesn't, atleast I am having fun!

I'm planning on coming over as long as the weather doesn't get bad or some other unforseen event pops up.I'll bring my Ubass and my tenor. Are you going to bring a few of your ukes to show off? I'm pretty decent at the ubass but pretty much a beginer at the tenor plus I don't sing much so.... whatever it's worth.

Ummm wow you have alot of ukes! I thought you had some tenors I could check out but it doesn't look like it.
Also do you know a good stringed instrument tech in the area? I'm noticing the fretted note on my kala's C and E string go pretty sharp on the first two frets. I'll want to get that checked out sometime soon.

1. thank Alex for coming and hanging with us
2. Thank Brad and Abby for coming also, they both are new to ukes but have a ton of talent
3. Say "I hope more people can come, I am going to keep having the meetings.

The Coffee house was packed with people getting ready for finals, they seemed to not care that we were there. One said that we sounded good.
Hoping to do it again next month and see who can come. I will keep this thread up to date on that.

Hankthetank
03-15-2011, 08:37 AM
With HULA, although it sounds cute, you are going to pigeon hole yourself to one style of music. In branding, people are either going to come out or not come out because the name suggests something. I am not sure what kind of music you play, but if you don't play Hawaiian music and call yourself HULA, then prepare to add it to the repertoire.
NUkeS is fun. NUG doesn't roll off the tongue. Just my opinion.

I don't think there was one in june. At least I didn't know about it.
The girls and I are going to host a ukulele jam in Taylorville (Illinois) Saturday July 30th 10-2 pm at the chautauqua pavilion in Manners Park . You are more than welcome to come if you feel like making the drive.
Probably older music (the kind we like) I'll post a thread in a bit.

A quick shout out from a new ukulele player (two months) from central IL, C-U area. Tim's ukeeku with reviews and info I needed, and boom, one thing leads to another, Aldrine videos, soprano reviews, Tim's Martin review, ukeeku.com, and now I'm addicted. I play about 30-60 minutes daily now, which, being married and having a full time job and kids, it's all I can do. But, anyhow, an introductory shout out and I hope to meet you all someday. I can't go to Milwaukee due to scheduling (i.e. life gets in the way), but I'll keep watching this thread. c ya.

Thanks cb and dk. I'm following the Uke In The Woods thread, but have other plans that weekend. WOuld be great to hammock camp, based on the webvideo from BAJ, thogh (plenty of trees surrounding the campsite)--I dig hammock camping. Best would be to meet many of you, esp the Illinois contingency. I'm trying for UWC next summer b/c my wife Cathy wants to scrapbook and shop in Nashville, IN., and since I'm on the hook to take her, I may as well strum and imbibe with you all. C ya. Thanks again for the welcomes.

Jake was, in a word, amazing. From 143 to Bohemian Rhapsody to Gently Weeps, I don;t think he missed a note. A smiling and entertaining ambassador for our instrument, I'm glad to have seen him.

I did not see the uke pre-show, and I wanted to get a good seat. Never ran into Tim or the others, unfortunately. I hope you all enjoyed the show. Not a bad seat in the house.

I plan to see Leon Redbone in the springtime. G'night, all. :)

Hi, my friend. I, too, was looking for you. I didn't quite make it in time for the pre-show demo. But, I was down on right, about row 6 or something. I'm sorry, I tried but couldn't spot you. We'll have to get together soon. If you have the tabs for the songs you mentioned (the Beatles and/or Bon Jovi), shoot them over to me. After Jake, I'm pretty psyched. LOL Cheers, T.

P.S. I already bought a ticket to Leon Redbone in February. Single ticket, my wife and kid just wouldn't like it. Let me know if you go and we can grab some grub beforehand. Decide quickly, it's almost sold out.

Maybe it was just me feeling this, but I felt like it clicked. it just had a feeling of fun and acceptance. We sang, we talked, it got a little unorganized, but that is what made it fun.
thanks for all that came. Hope to see more as time goes on.

I think it was awesome... The folks that were there were great! friendly and happy. We talked Ukes, sat in the "Comfy Chair" and had some crazy booboo tea.

all in all, I think this is a keeper!

SO the 7th of Jan at the Fusion Brew!, then maybe we can find a place for the mid-month uke jam somewhere they have beer!

Look for new flyers (with the correct address!) and we'll discuss the mid month location for the all-new "Uke-A-Drink-A-Lele"! (My vote is Medici, if they'll have us)

@Rob........how do you do that?

Let us see. I open your attachment, right click on it, click on "copy image location", go to a "quick reply", click "insert image", click "from URL", paste in provided area, uncheck "Retrieve remote file and reference locally", click "OK" and post message. It's not that complicated once you do it a few times. I think that you are bringing the file from your computer and I guess that makes it a "attachment". Once it's on the internet I can do my thing.
