Hi all! I have a cool program recommendation I thought I'd share with the community.

So I'm working on my next multitrack, and since I'm using some instruments I'm not all that familiar with, I thought I'd attempt arranging the whole thing before actually learning the parts and getting started. So that made me search for a free composer type program that will play back the notes you plug in to it (that's simple enough for a noob like me who cannot read music to figure out).

I stumbled upon MuseScore and I love it. You basically get to write music as you would on paper, making as many staffs as you'd like and having all the symbols at your fingertips. Then you can identify each staff with an instrument (which they have a bunch of them with midi sounds) and play back your arrangement either by part or all together. It's pretty cool.

Here's a link if it sounds like something you would use:

I don't know if this is a free download or just a free demo version that will expire, but I'm enjoying it.

It is freeware. :)

I downloaded it and it looks good, but it currently does not support tablature.

This page explains the creation of tablatures which will come available in the next stable version. If you want to test it, download the nightly build.
The "nightly build" is a prerelease (alpha? beta?) version.

The nightly builds use a cymbal logo to visually differentiate them from normal versions of MuseScore. The cymbal is a play on the fact that nightly builds are likely to crash. If this sounds scary to you then I recommend using the latest stable release from www.MuseScore.org
Nothing like truth in advertising. :p I think I'll wait for the next stable version.
