Since I live in japan, in an area with tons of fishing, I figure I should try out fishing line for uke strings. Does anyone know which brand of fishing string would be best?

Thanks

That is really a tough question. OldePhart has done reasearch using Seaguar to match Worth clear. And Seaguar is considered very good line.

Here is a site that sells the infamous 35-35-45-55 stuff that MGM talks about. I called them and they said it is really the same as the current 40-50-60, but the 35lb is a differnet diameter.

Since Worth CT doesn't work very well on my tenor ukuleles, I tried a monfilament Berkley Big Game in 40-50-60-80 and it was okay. A little dull, but Sport Chalet in SoCal sells it bulk for $.04 so for less than a buck I had plenty of line to test.

I did buy some cheap line off ebay that, so far, has turned out to be the best string I have tried for my tenors. And I've tried Savarez, Worth Clear and Browns, Aquila, Southcoast, and Hilo. It is not quite as bright as Aquila, it is a little heavier than Worth, but has less tension. I think it is a copoly blend of nylon and fluorocarbon. So it is probably not sold as 100% fluorocarbon. The stuff is called Eupro GT Advance and I think it is just NOS that someone is dumping. It may be lousy fishing line but it sure works for me.

I bought 40-50-60-80, but the 50lb looks like is sold.

Good luck!

I never thought about useing a fishing line for ukulele strings. Good creative idea and a fun experiment even if it doesnt sound amazing.

See if there's a tackle shop that sells fluorocarbon lines by the foot so you don't have to buy the entire spool for trying it out. It's common for tackle shops to offer lines for re-spooling fishing reels.

I believe that fluorocarbon lines were really designed for fishing and not for the ukulele market. There's a good chance that the fluorocarbon strings that we use are actually fishing lines. I don't think they would manufacture fluorocarbon lines specifically for the ukulele market but I could be wrong.
