I have a very special Gourd banjo uke on its way to me from Jeff Menzies (http://jeffreymenzies.com/), Its a Tenor Scale Gourd Banjo uke. Jeff is a well known banjo maker and artist who specializes in gourd and tackhead banjos. I am lucky to be getting the first banjo uke he has made. Its being finished today. I have never been as excited about a new instrument as I am about this one. Jeff's instruments are truly playable art. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_leqbzibCVF1qfmse2o1_r1_500.jpg

That is really cool.

Are ya gonna ask him to number it, and sign it? That would be really cooler even..

All of Jeffs banjos have serial numbers and his brand.

After a few days with it, I have decided it the coolest thing in the history of the world.

Very nice, distinctive sound. It sounds less twangy than a conventional banjo ukulele and less plinky than a conventional ukulele. And the cool factor is off the charts.

I believe Jeff has one almost done that doesn't have anyones name on it yet. Someone should snatch it up!

I bought the second one. I can't do a video because my camera has spontaneously decided that its video setting will never work again, but I've posted some pictures below. I may eventually manage a recording. It's just a neat, neat little instrument with a really unique sound.

I too am building some gourd ukes. I grew a bunch of straight neck speckled swan gourds. And I am in the process of securing a workspace to make a run of about twenty different ukes.(depending on gourd shape and size). There is no greater feeling than growing a beautiful gourd and turning it into a usable musical piece of art. I'll tell you this. They love chicken poop. You can see my unfinished first ukulele gourd at nicolahandmademusic.blogspot.com I am still curing the gourds from this past year and will have a new workshop on april first. I can't freekin wait.
The one pictured here in this post is beautiful and well made. Kudos to the builder. Gourds have a unique density that is excellent to amPlify this type of instrument. I will be sharing all my builds on my blog and would love to share shop secrets. I am glad to be a part of the underground.
