Hi everyone, I just wanted to announce HanktheTank's Slave 4 New Wave Ukulele Video Contest.
What: Submit a new wave ukulele video. Here is an example of 80's New Wave. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxpB5gjj2Q0 Make it a video response to my video above (not the new wave example video) and include "Hankthetank's Slave 4 New Wave Ukulele Video Contest" in the beginning. Have fun with it. But the number one rule is that your video should feature a ukulele.

When: Submit videos now till 11:59pm CST on Feb 28.
How: The winner will be picked on what video I liked the best. What does that mean? It could be anything. Could be based on the song choice, the playing, the video editing, getting into character, or your interpretation of a certain song. Consider it a challenge more than a contest in that regard. Put your best foot forward. For the video I pick, there may be better videos, but I don't want any whining on who should have won. I pick who I pick. This is supposed to be a fun contest.

Prizes: 3rd place will get a tuner or something comparable.
2nd place will get a Ukulele Underground Tshirt. And 1st place will get a Nalu Ahua Tenor. shipped anywhere in the world.
So thank you for entering and good luck to you. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
I hope you guys enter. I am excited to see what you all come up with. Thanks!

Heh, heh. This could be fun...

I watched the 80's compilation video you linked and one thing struck me - I'm kinda glad I was in the military through most of the 80's so I can safely say that no pictures of me with outlandish hair will come back to haunt me... :)

Nice contest Henry!
I will come up with something. I love new wave music myself. In fact, one of the reasons I stopped playing guitar in the 80's was that I was into a lot of guitar-less music - Dépêche Mode, Heaven 17, Yello, Kraftwerk - yeah, good times!
This is going to be fun!

A link to a YouTube video containing example of New Wave music is in the original post and on my announcement video (I think). Also, if you do a search on YouTube for New Wave music it will give you lots of examples. Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order, Erasure, The Smiths, and Duran Duran are groups that's I would classify as New Wave. I hope you enter.

For the ladies, the Pretenders kicked off New Wave with some great guitar work prior to the synth New Wave.

Check out the first Pretenders album and lets hear the rebirth of Chrissie Hynde.

I'd like to see Lil6ster play some this.

Early 80s, we went to see an upcoming band called the Police. THe opening band was the Pretenders. I told people that concert was better than Tom Petty Damned the Torpedoes and people thought I was crazy.

No worries on the response on the YouTube channel. I did get an email about it so its there. I just haven't been able to look at it through YouTube. I viewed your video through here. So that was a good idea to post it here. Your video is counted and is in the contest. Thanks again for being the first to submit a video.

OK Henry,
They say there is no dumb questions if you really don't know the answer. So, how dose a person make a video response on you tube to your video? I was looking for a button that said "video response". Didn't see one. This is the first time I tried to enter a contest. Can you tell.

hi. im having trouble distinguishing between 80's music and new wave music. is new wave music just a term for the popular 80's music?

Although they eventually hit mainstream, they are still considered "alternative", not pop. There were much more popular artists in the 80's like MJ, Madonna, and Prince, and they are definitely not New Wave. It's safe to say 80's music from Europe, especially the UK, that deviated from the popular sound, is New Wave. So punk, ska, synthpop, powerpop, experimental, and there are probably others I'm missing, all fit in that category.

This contest is RAD! I'm hoping to get some time to put something together.

Well I pulled out all the stops... even painted my pinky nail black with a magic marker pen
since I didn't have the nail varnish, and another thing which I don't have is hair, but if I did have,
I would have vigorously back-combed it, and spayed it with hair spray until it was as stiff
as a board, never-the-less I had to draw the line somewhere, and forfeited the chance to wear spandex tights.

Hey Cokecan, that sounds better with a uke than the poundy synth . That version is a winner.

Longtime I hadn't heard mexican radio. I enjoyed that.

ANd damn it to hell that russ buss's camera wasn't on autofocus and it did not automatically focus between the rotating shoe and the figure far off in the background. I'm a freak about possible camera interactions. Nonetheless, I had a good listen to walking in LA and again I enjoyed it.

I don't know if I can put something together as I have an active job search happening and my industry is going crazy - lots of opportunities but that means lots of work to uncover the best opportunities.

Thanks!

I got a copyright notice within minutes of posting my vid. I changed the content so that "contest" is mispelled, removed the chords, changed the category from Music to Education, and added a statement saying that I did not sample anything from the original song. I'm not sure what else they can get me on. But anyway, if anyone wants the chords, feel free to PM me here or on YT.

I know a few more videos are in the works or people are abandoning doing videos because they are afraid they will miss today's deadline. Since this is a fun contest and no lives hang in the balance, I can extend the deadline a few days. This is a busy week for me anyway. So let's say till the end of the week. Friday March 4. Midnight CST. I hope you all don't mind. That way I have the weekend to watch the videos and choose a winner.
So if you are on the fence because of time, you have a few more days. Don't wait till Thursday. Get those videos in.
Let me know if you have any questions comments or concerns. There are so many good ones I may have to add prizes.
Thanks everyone

My favorite Depeche Mode song has always been Enjoy the Silence. I have also always loved the video. Kind of weirdly fascinated by it. So I decided to do a Charlotte/ Ukulele version. We do not have pretty scenic cliffs and countryside, but we have ponds, a concerte slab, a skyline, and a really cool park!

Thanks for the contest Hank! I have been wanting to do this song and video for so long. This is my first venture into multi-tracking, so the audio isn't quite where I want it, but I am proud of it none-the-less.

Like I said, I am going to pick the videos that I liked the best. They may not necessarily be the best played or best edited, but the ones that moved me the most for whatever reason. Thanks everyone for embracing New Wave music and bringing back a ton of memories. You really rose to the challenge.

This is my video for the contest. It was so much fun to do! I'm really new to video editing and all that jazz, so the quality is pretty poor but I'll get better. Little story behind this video: It was 42 degrees (celsius that is, Lol) when I filmed this and after about the 4th take running back and forth I thought I was going to die. As I reached for the nice cold bottle of water I had brought with me (which was almost at boiling temperature by that point) I realized that I had grabbed the wrong bottle and this was a bottle of soda water. So the water I'm pouring into my face and downing is pretty much hot fizzy water. Not so refreshing. I just told myself it was for the art and kept on truckin'.

Thanks Hank for creating this wonderful contest. i had a lot of fun watching all the other videos too!

Congrats to all the winners!! This was a lot of fun. Thanks for the honorable mention Hank. I had thought about doing Don't Change by INXS since the contest was announced and tried to get it done early on and was having so much trouble synching everything (I'm new to it all). I finally gave it another try and got the video in after the original deadline. I loved watching all the videos and was inspired by many of them. Thanks again Hank!

Let me be the ump-teenth person to say Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Hank - I'd been wanting to sing "Not Even Close" practically since it first hit in 1989, and this was the perfect excuse. :)

Yeah, me too. Congratulations everyone. I know Deach is going to play a lot of blues on that uke! I loved this contest and am currently working on a better version of "Only You" by Yaz and I'm going to learn some of their other songs. Thanks Hankthetank!

I do not envy HankTheTank's task of having to pick the winners out of all those cool videos, but somehow he did it! Congrats to the winners!
