How to read picking/strumming patterns

ALOHA!
I'm fairly new to playing the uke.
I know basic strumming and chords.
But would like to change things up.
I wanna learn pickings and
different strumming for all songs.
Is there anything u guys can suggest for me to learn?
I'm basically learning through listening.

The Ukulele Solo DVD in the UU store is great, and I really like Ralph Shaw's Ukulele Strums DVD too. (sorry if the titles aren't quite right I'm at work and my memory isn't what it once was.)
