To pay homage to Chuck, and I'll say up front I'm not worthy, here's my spin on a Dragon Bass. This shouldn't mean anything to anyone, except for me - the dragon is from my personal tattoo, done by Billy Whitney at 808 Tattoo.

This is my first attempt at a bass, and though this is an `ukulele forum, there are basics that go along with hardbodies that I needed to research, and could effectively apply to a solidbody `ukulele. Sorry for the giant pics - I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to uploading non-edited images. . .

Really excellent work. It's nice to see others are trying their hand at something new. We used the same pup combination for our bass (alder body, purpleheart top, maple neck).

I know just about nothing about bass but that is a nice looking instrument.

Being a bass player myself I can really appreciate this post. Beautiful neck-thru. What did you make the neck out of? I'm thinking of building myself and my wife matching a matching bass & ukulele set this spring. Course, I'm going Conklin style and building myself a 7-string.

I figured a neck through would actually be easier to make and line up, without having to deal with joints and pockets - I was right. Neck is Birdseye Maple, oriented so that its quartered. Yeah, I know, sort of defeats the purpose as the figure only shows on the flatsawn cut, but, the neck is round, so its still there. The laminate is EIR down the center - I added in Milo strips on the outside prior to gluing the wings. After doing more research, if I ever do another one, it'll be Purpleheart down the center (Alembic). It has two CF rods and a Dual Action Truss Rod from BestBassGear. Even with all that stiffness, light gauge strings still pull the neck - truss rod works GREAT!

Conklin's are bad ass! I'd imagine 3 CF rods inbetween two truss channels should be about right for a 7 stringer.

My Bass instructor hot rodded his MII Fender (Squire) with P&J Bartolini's, and it sounded FAT! Since its my first bass, I installed the same ones (I play a MIM P with DiMarzio's), and, well, they're not coming out. MUCH more sustain out of the neck through, as expected. Glad I swapped the strings for D'Addario Chromes - matches Hawaiian music MUCH better (the ProSteels were fun though). I put the battery box there because now I have the option of doubling it up (wouldn't fit in the lower wing where you usually see it) for 18v on the preamp.
