I found a couple of nice walnut burls where I go wood scrounging. They are still wet and I have no idea when the trees were cut down. I would like to use this for rosettes and head plates. I have cut a few 1/8th inch slices and driven the moisture out of them with a hand iron. They look good and are dry. Do you think using them will be a problem?

I love using burl. They are great for small things like rosettes. For larger pieces like head plates you need to be a little careful. They need to be very dry as the wood can be quite unstable. I let mine air dry slowly for months after slicing into veneers before I ever consider using one.

It picks up and looses moisture and reacts in unusual ways. Good idea to stabilise it by flooding it with thin CA after glueing in place.
