Wood Frets?

Hello UU,

I was about to purchase fretwire, and then I thought I would ask this first: Do wood frets work? I've heard of them being implemented on ukes before. Secondly are wood frets installed in the fingerboard, or are they carved out of the fingerboard?

I've heard of people gluing toothpicks into grooves in the fingerboard to make wooden frets, but to be honest, fretwire is so cheap it seems daft not to use it.

I'm sure they would work for a while, but would wear out in pretty short order.

Yeah, it would be better to go fretless if you don't want to buy fret wire.

fretless sounds fun, but I have never played, so I'll be buying that fretwire.
