this may be a dumb question but how to you get the right sound of your uke? Do i put my finger on the fret or a in between?

Just behind a fret (nearest the body end of the uke), but it is common for newer players to press down way more than necessary.

In between and a little closer to the fret you are aiming for if possible, but if you are trying to jam more than two fingers onto a soprano fingerboard at the same time, just somewhere behind the fret is a good start!

When you get really good, position and degree of pressure can affect the note a bit.

Don't push down any harder than you have to, try to get a clean note with the least amount of pressure on the fingerboard.
