I'm thinking about ordering a solid Pono Mango uke. Anyone have a mango uke or played on one that could tell me what the sound is like. Is it similar to koa?
i have a Kala solid Mango that i bought broght MGM a couple of months ago.
to my ear Mango has a certain mellowness, similar to Mahogany mixed a with a bit of brightness.
imagine if a Mahogany uku and a Koa uku had a baby.

I picked up a Pono cedar and a solid mango pretty close to one another. The mango was well made, super glossy, good intonation and tuned low G. Plus its stunning to look at (pictures and a review here: www.ianchadwick.com/essays/ukuleles.htm
To my (admittedly tin) ears, it does not have the brightness of spruce, but has more than cedar, but somewhat less boomy bass than cedar. It doesn't have the sustain of cedar, either. I like it more as a strummer than a picker because it has a nice mid range without huge projection that could make chords sound muddy.
