In Paris, at a nightclub in the seedy part of town, a familiar site in an unfamiliar setting.

The musicians on stage play the ukulele.

"This will be one of the co-stars in our documentary," Tony Coleman said, holding up a collectors ukulele made in the 1920s.

Coleman, a Toronto native, is producing a documentary on the ukulele called "Mighty Uke" -- a world journey to find the four-stringed instrument.

"There's a whole different vibe, a whole different kind of music that happens on the ukulele," he said...

This is too cool. These guys came and filmed us at Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach, CA back in March. It's great to see that their project is advancing.

I was really hoping you were gonna say Bosko and Honey got backers.

That said, there need to be more uke documentaries.

And more UU members need to go out and buy a copy of "Rock That Uke."

Looking forward to this one.

I was thinking this would be a Bosko&Honey thread. But a uke documentary is a uke documentary. We're watch The Jumping Flea at the next local meetup.

Well, its release date has been bumped to the fall, but there's a web site and a trailer available that make it look like it will be well worth the wait:

I emailed the makers of the movie, since it looked like it was being done for Canadian TV. I wanted to know if it would be shown in the US or released on DVD, the reply I got was...

"Thanks for asking. We expect to be done in September and should have a DVD available not long after that. I'll keep the website updated. Take care, Margaret."

Put me down for a copy of that DVD! Can't wait...especially since "Rock That Uke" was a little more punk-oriented than I would have preferred, and the short film "Ukulele," while cute, wasn't a documentary. This one looks like the one I have been waiting for...

Wow, thanks for that Cpatch. The trailer was very cool. Can't wait to see the entire film. That was great seeing the late John King with James and Lil Rev. I've also seen those two kids from Hawaii smoke that Canon in D as well as a bunch of other tunes.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about a film called "Mighty Uke"? I haven't found anything about it in the UU forums. It's a feature-length documentary about "the global resurgence of the ukulele in the 21st Century." It was very well received at the Whistler (Canadian premiere) and Woodstock NY (world premiere) Film Festivals.

Here's the trailer:

Here are some video interviews with the filmmakers:

And here's the film's website: http://mightyukemovie.com/index.html (Scroll over the little boxes on either side of the homepage for links to other pages at the website).

According to the website, a DVD of the film will be out in the spring of 2010.

Hello Fellow Ukers;
Marg and I thought we should share some of the reviews we have received for MIGHTY UKE at our recent film festival screenings. We can't wait to show it to you all.

WESTENDER Magazine Andrea Warner

"The Mighty Uke, the festival's biggest surprise, is the way a documentary should be put together. It's perfectly structured, with plenty of historical perspective, and great interviews. It wholly embraces the corny and heartwarming nature of the very instrument it celebrates."

http://westender.com/articles/entry/whistler-film-festival-weekend-review/arts-and-entertainment/

MACLEANS Magazine Brian D. Johnson Film & Reviews

"I did catch the Canadian premiere of a sweet, fascinating documentary about the ukelele called The Mighty Uke, which was followed by a roof-raising live performance by two dozen young musicians from B.C.’s Langley Ukelele Ensemble."

http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/12/10/ivan-reitman-warms-up-whistler/

CHRONOGRAM Magazine Sparrow

"Most essentially, "Mighty Uke" conveys the secret tidal wave of syncopated strumming and spirited amateurism sweeping our digitalized globe...it's always charming, and it offers key musical discoveries every three minutes."

http://www.chronogram.com/blogs/Quarter-to-Three/show/Woodstock-Film-Festival-2009-Mighty-Uke

At both the Woodstock Film Festival and the Whistler FIlm Festival MIGHTY UKE was runner-up for the audience award.

In 2010 we plan on taking the film on tour around the world. We are calling it the Mighty Uke Roadshow and hope to include both professional and amateur performances wherever we screen the film.
We will also be putting a sneak peek of MIGHTY UKE on youtube in the new year.
Please email mightyuke@hotmail.com and let us know if you would like to bring the MIGHTY UKE ROADSHOW to your town.
The MIGHTY UKE DVD will be released early in the new year and will include the 80 minute feature documentary plus 10 short films about all things ukulele.
We hope to meet you all on our ukulele journeys in 2010
Big thanks again.

I just saw it on TV (the day I got back from Maui with my first uke! Brag, brag, brag...).

I thought it was a very cool film: well researched, shot and edited, informative and entertaining with an interesting story line and great characters, young and old.

IMDB page here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1479293/ .

Well worth watching, kudos to the film makers!

Awww, I'm so jealous. I really am dying to see this movie...

What was your favorite part of the movie?

P.S. So what uke did you buy in Maui? Congratulations on it by the way.
