View Full Version : Sing a Disney theme park song ---> Win a K-wave!

NatalieS

I am a huuuuuuge Walt Disney World fan, and I know there's more like me out there. :D I am holding a giveaway contest for the Kiwaya K-wave ukulele pictured below.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa270/nksteckler/015-1.jpg

Okay, so here are the rules:
1) Your song must be a song that was written for a Disney theme park. It could be a song from a ride, such as "It's a Small World" or "Yo Ho Yo Ho, a Pirate's Life for Me". It could be a song from one of the fireworks shows "We Go On", or "Fantasmic". As long as the song was created for the theme park, and isn't a classic Disney tune (such as "When You Wish Upon a Star") you're ok. You can pick the most obscure of songs if you want, because I guarantee I know most of them. If you don't know if your song will work, PM me and I'll let you know if it's ok to use.
2) Your song must feature the ukulele. You don't have to sing. You can play an instrumental as long as it's recognizable.
3) Only one entry allowed per person.
4) At the beginning of your video, you must mention that you're playing/singing for the K-wave contest.
5) Your video must be posted as a reply in this thread.

Deadline is April 1, 2011 at midnight EST

A winner will be chosen after all videos are viewed by my family. We are true Disney nuts and we'll have fun with this, and I hope you have just as much fun making your video!

Ooooh, cool! Does it have to be from a current attraction?

Because I've always liked "The Best Time of Your Life". :-)

So I haven't been to a disney park since I was about 9 years old and I cant really think of any songs from the park besides the ones you already mentioned. Are other classic disney songs okay?

Is it okay if it's just an instrumental piece? (I can't sing for my life :(

Ooooh, cool! Does it have to be from a current attraction?

JJ

Nope, it can be from any attraction ever, doesn't have to be current. Also, as long as it's from a Disney theme park, it doesn't have to be from a ride. For instance, "Main Street Welcome Song" is a song sung every morning in the Magic Kingdom, but it's not necessarily an attraction. :)

So I haven't been to a disney park since I was about 9 years old and I cant really think of any songs from the park besides the ones you already mentioned. Are other classic disney songs okay?

I'm sorry, I'm going to restrict this contest to theme park songs. There have recently been at least two contests using classic Disney tunes, so I wanted to have a different theme for this one. If you need help finding a song, there are several websites and YouTube channels devoted to Disney theme park music.

Is it okay if it's just an instrumental piece? (I can't sing for my life :(

YES, it can be instrumental! You don't have to sing, but the tune does have to be recognizable. :D

Medleys are fine! After all, I think Disney parks are the #1 medley makers in the world, lol. (Speaking of, the "Wishes" fireworks show is a fantastic medley that splices in new lyrics, classic Disney tunes, and quotes from movies.) That'd be a fun one for uke.

To everyone who submits videos: I will not be watching or commenting on your videos until after the contest is over and all videos are submitted. I don't want to get biased in any way. :)

Seeing if I can hop through the loophole. I have a popular Disney song that I have been working on for awhile. If it is in a Disney theme park I am good? I love Disney....but have never been fortunate enough to go to Disney Land or World. Went to the Disney Store a few times before they closed it here in Utah :(

Octopusike, you can PM the song title to me and see if it'll work.

Again, I'll address the questions about "classic" Disney tunes. Just about every Disney song is played at some point in a Disney theme park. I probably hear "When You Wish Upon a Star" every time I go to the Magic Kingdom. But this song wasn't created specifically for the theme park. Entries need to feature a theme park song. Provines posted a great link for those of you not familiar with any of the song. :D Thanks!

Finally had some time to put this together. Imagine riding that cool ride through Spaceship Earth in EPCOT with Walter Cronkite's voice floating through the narration. I heard this song was taken out during renovation and then put back in at the end of the ride because people said they missed it.

It plays better if you watch it on YouTube's site and go full screen. So, turn the room lights off and feel the Disney....

I haven't done a contest in a little while. But my girlfriend is a big Disney nut (she actually works as a performer at Disney World once a year), so I knew she'd want to come up with something once she heard about this. I'm not quite the fan that she is, but I had a lot of fun going through all the song choices. "Listen to the Land" was a close runner-up. I also like "Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit." But in the end, we had to go with this song, if only for it's pure synth cheesiness. Plus it gave me an excuse to use all my musical toys from the 80's. I think this song will actually make it into our repertoire, we performed it live last Saturday at the Uke Hut event in NYC. So thanks for holding this contest and inspiring some new material.

It's a Synsonics drum pad. And the weird thing is an ektar that my friend brought me from Nepal. It's basically a one-note whammy bar. I also posted the chords on Youtube in case anyone wants to learn the song. Although the original is in G and we moved it up to A.

First, thanks to NatalieS for organising this contest. I learned a lot by taking part in it.

OK, here is my entry:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg-IU6LxcIc

I also chose "It's a small world" or "le Monde est Tout Petit" as we call it in Disneyland Resort Paris. It's a perfect match for a contest with participants from all over the world playing a small guitar! ;) I also have a vintage "it's a small world" music box from EuroDisney's early years. I couldn't resist playing along to it.

Fun facts:
- The main uke is a cheap Aloha 20s, also played with a shot glass for the sliding effect towards the end.
- The bass part is played on an Eleuke, doubled and pitch-shifted.
- I also used a jew's harp, a shaker egg, castanets, a tambourine and an harmonica.
- All the instruments are visible in the video.
- There are close to 400 individual pictures in the stop motion movie!
- All the drawings were done using Inkscape, an open source vector drawing software. Feel free to send me a message if you're interested in the SVG files.

Well, I guess it's time to go to sleep as it's already 3:30 in the morning here.

The winner of the ruby red K-wave is........ for their rendition of "Universe of Energy", UU member gioconbrio!!!!! I especially enjoyed this video for the clever use of props, impressive array of instruments used within the song, and the cheesy smiles and thumbs up which brought a smile to my face. You truly captured the spirit of Disney (happiness, silliness, and a little education on the side). ;)

It was a difficult contest to judge, and I'm glad I have several willing cohorts within my family to help choose the winner. I can't give my fellow UUers enough kudos for their creative ideas, and I wish I could give prizes to all of you for your effort.

Congratulations to the winner and thank you to all who participated!

Whoa. Wow, thank you so much Natalie. And thank you everyone for the kind words. This is the first contest we've ever won. Congratulations to all the participants, I think we all got some new tunes out of this contest.

Dear Natalie,

I want to thank you and your family so much for this contest!

Not only did it get me to post my first video here on UU, it got me 2 ukuleles!

My cousin saw it and said "Hey, I have an ukulele in my closet that someone gave me when they moved away, so I'll send it to you for your kids' project."

And one of my clients saw it and said "Hey, I'd love to buy you another Makala Dolphin for your kids' project, I'll send you a check tomorrow."

So yay! I'm triply blessed by your contest!

Thanks muchly,

Maiyah
