I know there's been a couple of questions around this before but does anyone have any experience of using a guitar strap rather than a Uke Leash or Uke Thong?

If I'm doing some standing up jamming I find that I can't keep my Tenor or Concert supported well enough.

I'm wondering if guitar straps are generally OK or too over the top?

Cheers,
Claudio

Look at the Levy Deluxe Mandolin strap (such as at Elderly). Plenty big enough for a uke.

I prefer the version with a buckle for length adjustment.

My husband has a guitar strap on his tenor Eleuke, but he has a mando strap on his "main" uke (also a tenor). I also use a mandolin strap on my "main" uke, which is a concert.

One of the advantages of the mandolin strap is that it has a loop for the neck, so only one strap button is necessary.

uke leash option

I use the uke leash with this strap button adapter. A guitar strap would work but I like the light, thin feel of the uke leash.

I've used everything from string to a coconut shell (coin-shaped pieces) belt as my ukulele strap. I find that it's fun to use different things to accomplish a needed function.

I currently use an actual dog leash as my ukulele strap! I actually have several, from light weight to heavy weight. I've removed the larger swivel clip and replaced it with something lighter and smaller.

I say, whatever does the job for you, go with it. If you really like the looks and feel of a particular guitar strap, go for it. I believe Bruce Shimabukuro, Jake's younger brother, uses a guitar strap that looks like yellow crime scene tape!

Just keep uke'in',

I use guitar straps as well. I installed a strap button on my Kala tenor on the bottom, then I use a Martin leather strap button http://amzn.com/B0002E37GS at the headstock and also I use a Planet Waves quick release system at the headstock http://amzn.com/B0002GWFEQ. They work out perfectly for all of my ukes and I can use any guitar strap with them.

I put a big ole neoprene bass strap on my concert. . . .I like irony . . .

The pickup strap attachment is the bane of all acoustic players. No one makes a strap end that fits over them. :(

So I buoght a button and screwed it into my Kala.
I bought a leather mandolin strap and hooked it up.

Works very well except I had to clean the leather work a couple of times in soapy water. The tanning treatment or whatever was irritating my throat and nose quite badly. Doesn't seem too bad now. Shocking really.

This works on leather straps.
Soak the leather end in warm water until the leather is soft.
Remove from the water and put a AA battery in the hole and let is dry overnight.
For me this makes the hole big enough to slip over the pickup plug with cutting the hole and it still fits snuggly.

how about a child-sized guitar strap? are they out there?

Take a leather strap to a shoe repair shop, with the button, and they can punch the hole larger for a perfect fit. A local shop charged me a buck and it looked like it came that way, and works perfectly (on a guitar, but would be fine on a uke as well).
