Hey guys, we want to start posting some of our members videos on the main site. If you have a uke related video you want to show off, post the address here and we'll try to pick one every week to put on our main site.

This week's video is from NukeDOC.

NukeDOC,
What camera are you using? Maybe try to use the back light feature if it has one. The video was a little dark. We want to see your smiling face:).

i just use the iSight camera built into my macbook. but i also wear that hat in that way to cover up my face a bit. ill admit, i am fairly narcissistic, if you couldnt tell from all the mirrors (you should see my medicine cabinet). but when it comes to posting videos online, im a pretty shy guy.

nUkedoc have you done customizations in the past? How did you learn?

i mentioned in another thread that almost nothing i own is in its original format. im always trying to think about how i can make something "my own". you should see my motorcycle hahaha.

but in terms of musical instruments, this is probably the biggest step ive made. and its not even close to done yet. im still going to figure a way to mickeymouse a pickguard, maybe do some carving or burning, gonna fill up the holes left in the headstock with some putty, gonna try to make a new nut and saddle too (still not completely satisfied with them).

as far as the other instruments, its basically just repainting, stripping down to natural wood finish (elec guitar), pickup installation, strap button installation, switching from friction to geared tuners and vice versa, action set up. i may be forgetting some stuff.

i would love to get into building ukes... but that is just too much of an initial investment for me at this point in my life to be making for the purpose of making one ultimate ukulele. id rather pay someone to make it for me. but anything short of that... im willing to figure it out and do it.

Thats awesome. I'm pretty handy but I've never tried anything customizing any of my instruments. The biggest change I've ever made to an instrument was putting stickers on it. lol I bet it feels good to make something your own, unique. Something nobody else has eh?

When my life gets a little less busy, I will learn though one of these days..

i would be scared to do any modifications to my uke. i like to customize things too, like my old laptop that i painted. but it was old so i didn't mind. something like my uke is a little more nerve racking for me since i get too nervous lol.

If you notice... my earlier videos we're in the dark. I didn't want my face known to public but Danyo convinced me not to be shy anymore.

You can also look at Danyo's "Is there a place" video. I intentionally let my head be cut off from that video. LOL

well, bro, if i ever get as famous as you... i just might start showing my face and using better lighting in the future hahaha.

i wish i wasnt as shy. but another reason i do it is because my friends are such great friends that anything we can find out about each other to make fun of... we dont just make fun of it. we exploit it. so i have to be pretty careful about what i post on there because these a-holes that i call my brothers just might be scoping out my page looking for the next thing to embarrass me with in front of a girl that i like. hahaha.

Wow! Thanks for choosing my vid as video of the week! I'm blown away!

Just a little background on the video. I recently spent a week in the hospital (in Japan) because of shingles on my face. Still got the scars on my face to prove it (which is why I don't show my face in the video). One of the hardest things about being in the hospital was not being able to play the uke or sing. I listened to my iPod a lot and thought about what song I wanted to try to cover (or hack) on YouTube. "Here, There, Everywhere" was my first effort after coming out of the hospital. You guys just made my week! Mahalo!

UU,
thanks for the honor! I am totally stoked! However, I must admit I'm a bit ashamed about "snatching" the honor from the unnamed other member who was supposed to get the honor. I actually posted my vids in the vids and links section so as not to be in the MVOW pool (I didn't know that section was eligible for the VOW, nor did I expect to ever get honored). But thanks so much, it was really unexpected and much appreciated! I'm just lucky that the UU staff was on a Hendrix kick. Thanks again for the support, glad you liked the vid!

What is a "La Folia chord progression" used in this week's video? It sounds cool but I dont know what it is.

Click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJf_GrQcZ00) and go to the Youtube page for that song. There are links in the sidebar to history of La Folia.

Here's what LeoHareMusic said in his challenge video description:

Write a song based on "La Folia". Any style, any way. On ukulele, of course!

In D minor the chords are:
Dm A7 Dm C F C Dm A7 Dm

Listen to the various videos to get the basic timing.

The Challenge:

1) Change the key
2) Add words

Add anything else you need to make it work!
Post a video response!

It's a fun series of chords to fool around with. Or to "noodle" with!:)

Here's a vid of a tune I have in progress in the studio right now. I made this as a reference for the percussionist who came in to layer some frame drum and tabla over a basic track that we started. The arrangement has changed, as this is just an improv but it had the vibe I'm looking for and since I couldn't be there when the percussionist did his thing, YouTube subbed for me. It's an old song I wrote on guitar and thought would sound better on uke. The time signature is 21/8, in this pattern: 3/2/3/2/3/3/3/2. For the "percussion" I used a 5gal water bottle (empty!), then put a rhythm trk LT & RT, then this solo you see over that. It's recorded here on Garage Band and it's full of traffic squeals outside etc, but the groove is there and the vid served its purpose. Gotta love YT for that!

Well, this is my third Ukulele video since i got into playing the uke about three or four weeks ago, and it is nothing if not a testament to Aldrine's ability to teach. I discovered his tetris video lesson oh about 48 hours ago and he is such a great teacher i have already been able to hammer out my own little version of. I know it isnt perfect but like i said its only been about two days or so. But i have been practicing it non stop. So much so that my thumb started to blister. As you can see in the video i had to tape it off so i could keep playing (im not addicted to the uke). Anyways try not to be too harsh it is like three in the morning. I did my best . This one's for you Aldrine. I'm sure i have much more to learn from you in my future. Maybe someday we can jam. Thank you everyone and tell everyone to watch it i want lots of feedback.

I would like to submit our ukulele big band performance of "Ja Da" from the Lone Star Uke Fest in Dallas, TX this last weekend for the member video of the week. One of the workshops was a ukulele big band taught by James Hill and we only rehearsed for about 2 hours total. We are all at varying skill levels and chose our sections based on that. There are about 20 of us performing 4 different parts that were arranged by James. James conducted us and Ukulele Bartt did a swinging solo. It was great fun! There is a bit of an intro and the song begins around :40.

Here's a rough demo of a new tune I just put down with my co-writer Greg Paxton, who's also playing steel drums, drums, percussion and synth bass. The bass is going to be redone soon with a great player from Trinidad, who has the "proper" feel for this sort of thing. It's going on a CD we're working on.

The vid is me noodling to the basic tracks on the Bushman Jenny Pineapple with Savarez strings which I still can't believe I won in the Play The Beatles contest (thanks again jumpingflea!), but the underlying rhythm and lead uke is a Mainland mahogany (thanks again, hoosierhiver!).

Greg and I sat down and set out to fuse calypso and bluegrass (wha....?) and this is the result. Not to blow my own horn, because Greg the pan man came up with the riff, but this thing kicks some serious booty and was a real feat for me to put down! The bassist is from Trinidad, Kirkwood Coakley, and his playing is fantastic. I'm just trying to keep up!

Anyway, thanks for indulging me and I promise to back off of the shameless self-promotion!

I'm all excited right now because I just got a song of ours into a movie. I wrote it with my steel drum player, Greg Paxton and used a Mainland Concert Mahogany. The song is "So I Wait" and the movie is "The Social Network" out Oct. 1, directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven, Panic Room, Benjamin Button). It'll play outside a fraternity party, thru the walls mostly, until a door opens and hopefully the uke will be heard! In a lot of ways the song wouldn't have existed without me having spent way too much time here, but I'm glad it does, and glad I did... or something...

Anyway, here's the original demo (w/me playing over it on a Bushman pineapple for the vid):

Hi guys!! Ok I'll give a try for the MVOW !!! For my entry I will share with you the first time I ever do a duet with someone!!!

Usually I'm a solo player but since James Hill was doing a show in Montreal last night, my uke club was asked to open the show for him...so I decided that I should try to do a duet with one of the member in my uke club...

I was kind of stress out because we decided to do it at the very last minute so we didn't have the chance to practice together much before the night before the show!!!

So we decided to do a cover of 'Bizarre Love Triangle'' popularized by New Order and then by Frente.

Sound might not be always good because it was recorded live with all the noise in the background for the opening of James Hill performance in Montreal on July 27th 2010.

So thanks for watching!!!

242 is my fave band, so I will definitely be doing one of theirs. I even came up with some parts to "Tragedy >For You<." I have to make sure it's cool like a tribute, not a parody, lest I get crucified by the rivetheads. :)

I think I'll have to find an alternate video as ukulele pole dancing probably violates Youtube's terms of usage. lol

Here is a video of me playing my new Mitchell soprano ukulele. This was the first time I EVER posted a video of myself on youtube--momentous occasion!
My voice sounds pretty good, and I must admit, the uke playing is kind of adorable, considering I'm a very very very beginner player. But hey, I tried! Can't fault me for that.

Well, I guess I finally have one worth sharing. This is an international collaboration between the U.S. and Japan. I really wanted to meet a few of my ukulele Youtube heroes; Max (the ukulele punk rocker) and Mr. Yoshimura (of ukeytar fame). We ended up recording a song and making a music video during my August vacation. It's definitely one of the most absurd things I've ever done.

You ARE the Mose Allison of the Ukulele! I am serious, you know I love your stuff, and the payoff of the ending, You are here, is so great to this song. You have a stunning way with lyrics and I am just so glad to see all the great stuff you do. I hope people appreciate the craft that is going on here, not to mention the wonderful jazz chords, but I am serious. I have been a Mose Allison fan since the 70s and you have that same quality - to capture the things of our time yet be totally timeless. Great work.

Howdy Rayan,

Here are several UU folks on one video (I'm pickin my Mya-Moe Resonator) and we have a KoAloha concert doing the licks, a Grazziano baritone, and tiny sopranino as well has a harmonica.

So 5 piece group with 4 uu'ers.

Hope some folks enjoy....many more videos posting now that my JayUkulele Channel is up on YouTube.

Here's a vid I just put out on July 3rd for my song "Until the End". It's got eleuke baritone and peanut. I wrote and recorded the song myself, and produced the video entirely on my own too (along with my good friends Trial and Error :o ). It was a real labor of love and I hope you enjoy it.
