Just heard (and can see) the devastating tsunami hitting Japan. Warnings just issued in Hawaii.

My prayers to brothers and sisters in Japan and Hawaii.

Makes dust on my Kamaka finish seem ridiculous, because compared to this, it is.

Stay safe!

Tsunami is expected to arrive here on Guam in about an hour. I live on higher ground but lower areas along the coastline are being advised to seek higher ground. I'll keep you all posted as they occur. Prayers to those who are affected by this disaster.

Thanks Thom,
There was earthquake of magnitude 7 in Japan just now. There seems to have been serious damage in Tokyo, Chiba and Sendai area. Airport, traffic and information seems to be considerably confused.
Take care.

I am in Okinawa, all is well here. The devastation in northern japan is incredible. The tsunami in northern prefectures was 13 ft tall. Cell phone services were out in alot of areas. Keep your fingers crossed.

I was panicking when I heard about the earthquakes and tsunamis, as I have family in Japan. Luckily they live on the west coast, where as the horrors are occurring in the east. The pictures on the news are just terrifying to watch. As the same with everyone: My thoughts go out to all the people affect by this!
(I just got news that the Japanese earthquake was approximately 1000 times stronger than the recent one in Christchurch, New Zealand! Scary!!)

Have we heard when the Tsunami will hit Hawaii/East Coast? Have friends there, and worried about them as well as sending out prayers and thoughts to those affected in all the countries affected by this earthquake and resulting Tsunami.

Stay Safe everyone

Yeah I don't think it's hitting the East coast of the US, that's a different ocean. My Hawaiian twitter friends are going silent... :(

My prayers are with all involved in the Pacific. apparently the Hawaiian coast is being evacuated, and "The main airports on at least three of the major islands -- Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii -- were shut down as a precaution, and the U.S. Navy ordered all warships in Pearl Harbor to remain in port to support rescue missions as needed."

What's strange is that I was shaken awake by a local earthquake (epicenter in Kalapana) at about 11:00pm. A few minutes later I heard the tsunami sirens going off. Then the phone started ringing and I knew it was going to be a long night. Should hit Kauai first, in less than an hour from now. We just got and evacuation order from Civil Defense. Gotta go!

I talked to Ryan, he said they are expecting it soon. He hasn't heard from AG yet but I checked on google and Thailand seemed unaffected by the quake. Hope everything is okay over there.

Saw the aerial footage of the waves rushing along the land in Japan, pushing a wall of debris, wiping out everything in front of it... just mind-boggling. Like something from a movie.

Stay safe, everyone! My thoughts are with all of those in affected areas.

My thoughts are with all in Japan. I was so scared because my 89 year old grandfather and his wife are in her house in Yokohama and we were not able to get through to them to make sure they are okay. My uncle just emailed me a couple of minutes ago to say he was able to confirm they are okay. Still, I feel so terrible for everyone else who was not as fortunate.

That's good. When someone mentioned in this thread that the Navy had ordered all of their fleet to remain in harbor to assist after the wave I knew they couldn't be expecting a really large wave to hit Honolulu. In the case of a really large wave you'd want the ships out of the harbor where they can ride the (smaller) swell and so they don't become battering rams (note the shipping trawlers and ferries floating inland like big steel battering rams in the videos from Japan).

I'm on Maui right now and although we got 8ft, it wasn't that bad. No major damage. According to the local news there was some damage on the Big Island in the harbor areas but mostly water overflowing walls and flooding some buildings etc. No deaths reported and nothing at all like Japan.

ATT cell service is offline, however, so that might account for difficulty getting through to people.

News reports here in San Francisco are saying that the west coast of the Big Island got hit by the tsunami and there was some flooding. Here in California, high waves wiped out a harbor somewhere near Santa Cruz, and there have been other reports of damage along the mid-California coastline. The waves are a bit high at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, but nothing serious.

I've also heard that there's some concern about a nuclear power plant in Japan that may have been damaged by the quake, and people within a few miles of the plant are being evacuated.

My thoughts are with people affected by the quake/tsunami and their families.

Ali'i drive on the BI is pretty wet - along with much of the Kona coast. I think everyone is okay. I haven't heard of anyone being hurt here. Here are some pictures: http://connect.hawaiinewsnow.com/CommunityGallery.aspx?m=1. Not super bright the guy who took this, but it gives you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91Wh0_yNJhc.

I saw that video and while I appreciated him taking it and posting it, I did question his sanity.

That's quite a mess that resulted. I'm very glad to hear that no one was hurt in Hawaii.

Certainly sad about the destruction and casualties in Japan.

My experience with ATT cell service in these parts (admitedly several years ago) is they go offline if someone sneezes hard...

I stayed up to watch the Tsunami last night. Thankfully nothing happened. But at about 2:30 when it was announced that school was cancelled today, there were waves of cheers at the dorms. Just as loud as the sirens.
