Last week I got an email from Chuck saying a slot had opened up in his build date (originally my ukulele was supposed to start in June or July). I jumped on it. I wanted to keep this somewhat subtle...no fancy inlay, just a subdued beautiful instrument. So, my specs:

Tenor slotted headstock
Maple rosette
Maple body, fretboard, headstock binding
Rosewood fretboard, bridge, and headstock veneer
Gold mother of pearl inlays ("M" on headstock, dots on fretboard)
Side sound port

Chuck mentioned that he would have to find a piece of koa with both light and dark coloring to work with the maple. Monday night I got this picture:

http://i902.photobucket.com/albums/ac230/Nuprin1030/Moore%20Bettah/DSC_0017.jpg

Subtle curl and the lighter striations will really work with the maple. Chuck mentioned that the blotchiness is from the alcohol drying which he used to show the grain.

Tuesday he sent me an email saying he has set in the rosette and I'll see pictures soon. He said it's looking very nice. Less than 10 minutes later I get an email saying that he's bracing my sound board....the man works fast!!!

My uke is scheduled to be finished sometime in May. Since I first started frequenting this forum and seeing and hearing Chuck's work, I've dreamt about getting a Moore Bettah...can't believe one will be in my hands within a couple of months!!!

I'll keep this thread updated as I get more pictures and progress reports from the build.

Suhweeet Nuprin. I know just how you feel. Looks like we have a couple of lucky fellows from our ranks who have been included in Chucks current build cycle. Along with Landshark's thread, it looks like we may be getting some dreamy pictures posted from time to time.

The pin knots in the upper bout are no longer there. There's a big hole there instead. Hope that's OK. I also just punched another hole in the side of your uke.

What's all this fuss about this guy Chuck Moore and his ukes? Is it any better than my Sam's Club Leolani tenor?

You are in for a real treat! Congratulations!
Chuck's instruments are superb in all respects. And what has been said about instrument "break in" is true - after a few months of regular playing, you will be even more amazed by the sound. I own a custom LoPrinzi and a special order Kamaka, and my Moore Bettah embarrasses both of them.
Bravo!

You're killing me, Chris! Here I am strumming your "cast off" Gstring, w/my new LoPrinzi Tenor waiting its turn, while my KoAloha's languish in their cases & wonder what they did to deserve the banishment! Meanwhile, my Sailor Soprano thought it would enjoy at least a couple of weeks of primacy before being resigned to its case?!

THAT is going to be a lovely uke. Perhaps it is time to get my name on Chuck's build schedule for the Fall. IF I can just resist a Kamaka Pineapple that is CALLING me to rescue it from its guitar store surroundings! :)

Looks like Landshark and I are on the same schedule! I like having 2 Moore Bettah build threads going on, extra eye candy! Here are the pics Chuck sent my way this afternoon. Back when we first started talking about the design, Chuck had mentioned that nobody had ever asked for a maple rosette or binding before. I feel special!

It's Friday (well technically it's now Saturday) and that means Moore Bettah update picture day!

The neck has been roughed out and temporarily attached for a couple of pics.

Bare body:

With pore filler:

Final coat of lacquer was applied today:

Ain't she purty? The body will now sit for a few weeks before it is sanded and buffed. Chuck will next be working on the neck components.

New picture day! Chuck has finished my headstock and neck. I was going simple with this...just some dot inlays in gold mother of pearl. Sticking with Chuck's "M" as I like the flowing look of it as well as my last name begins with "M" so it works well. Chuck wrote me a couple of days ago saying the extended fretboard area is begging for a small inlay. He asked what I thought of geckos. I've seen Chuck's gecko inlays and liked them so I told him to go for it. Got the pictures today. It's going into the spray booth tomorrow and the lacquer will make the colors more vibrant. Anyway, should be another 15-20 days until it's done!

On a side note, I'm sitting in the Tokyo airport with a 4 hour layover waiting for my flight to Hawaii! Spent the last couple of weeks visiting family in Singapore and now I get to relax for a few days. Definitely going to make it to some uke shops (staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village so I'll go to the uke store at the resort as well as Ukulele Pua Pua which is pretty close). Also hoping to hit up a factory tour or two (thinking Kamaka and KoAloha...wouldn't mind getting a good deal on a factory second). Any other thoughts of uke related activities or shops I should hit up? I will not be renting a car so it would need to be within walking distance.

Beautiful, I love geckos

It's very fitting that Chuck suggested a gecko. As I mentioned, I spent the last couple of weeks in Singapore. Chichaks (also known as house geckos) are very common at night so I would often sit outside at night and play my Flea and watch them going after the bugs. Guess Chuck must have been telepathically getting that vibe from me when he suggested the inlay!

I told you it would be worth the wait! Lovely tight grain on the rosewood. Actually, Chuck did the same thing with mine. However, I like yours better. Its a little more subtle.

As Ronnie's teacher I can personally vouch he plays above the 3rd fret.

He's actually just now starting to play at the 5th fret.

It's done and was shipped yesterday. According to USPS, it's guaranteed to be delivered by 3:00 PM tomorrow. Pretty fast from Hawaii to the East Coast. I LOVE what Chuck has done. It's a subtle uke but I think it works so nicely together. I absolutely love how well the maple and gold MOP compliment the rosewood fretboard and headstock. I had a last minute change on the design...I asked Chuck to install a MiSi for me...I play amplified enough (mostly open mics) that it would be worthwhile. I normally trust my local luthier to install pickups for me but I didn't want to take any chances with this uke. I cannot wait to get my hands on this.

I have Thursdays and Fridays off from work. I originally told Chuck to send it to my workplace as 1. I'm there most of the week and 2. If I wasn't there, it wouldn't sit outside. I figured I made the right decision when Chuck told me he mailed it yesterday...figured Hawaii to Vermont, no way would it arrive that quickly. Well, looks like I'll be hanging around work for awhile tomorrow waiting for the mailman!
