So far I'm the only one contributing to this thread. Ah well, if there are any lonesome uke players strumming in the mountains of Snowdonia who are reading this do come down from the hills and join us at Bangor Uke Club, every Tuesday 8pm, at The Greek, Upper Bangor. Here's what we got up to at our first meeting and some useful links:

1) We learnt some chords. We learnt C Major, F Major and G seventh normally written as G7. Here's a link to a ukulele chord chart - look them up
http://www.ukalady.com/Images/UkeChart.pdf Read the chart as follows: the top of the 'box' is the nut of the ukulele, the horizontal lines are the frets - in descending order from the top, 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc, the vertical lines represent the strings - left to right (or from the one nearest your chin to the one nearest your knees when you're sitting holding the uke) g c e a.
2) Pete taught us that the three chords we'd learnt form part of what is known as a '3 Chord Trick' - found in loads of music from blues through rock and roll to pop and indie. 3 Chord Tricks can occur in any key - we learnt it in the key of C Major where the 3 chords of the 3 Chord Trick are C, F and G7. C, F and G are the 'root' or 1st, 3rd and 4th notes in the scale of C Major. To work out what chords you'd need to use to play a 3 Chord Trick in another key use the thumb and fingers of one hand. Your thumb is the root, you're not bothered about your index or middle finger (the 2nd and 3rd notes in the scale), your ring finger is the 4th note and your little finger the 5th.

3) We agreed that we'd each try to look up a three chord song to bring to the group next week so we can all play it. Lots of songs can be found at www.chordie.com where you can search by artist or song title. Click the box on the right hand side where it says 'Tuning' and select 'Ukulele (C Tuning) and it'll show you ukulele chord boxes. A list of two and three chord songs is available here http://doctoruke.com/twoandthreechordsongs.pdf in fact, Doctor Uke's excellent website contains loads of songs with chord boxes for ukulele above the lyrics to help you sing and play at the same time find it here http://www.doctoruke.com/songs.html
4) Other good places for songs and info about all things ukulele related - reviews of instruments for sale, videos, lessons etc. - are UkeHunt (don't say out loud in front of your mum) which can be found here http://ukulelehunt.com and Ukulele Underground here at http://www.ukuleleunderground.com
5) If you're on Facebook join the Bangor Ukulele Club Facebook Group which can be found here www.tinyurl/BUCFBG

Have a good weekend, a good a day as it is possible to have on a Monday considering it is a Monday, which'll see you coming up smiling for

Not sure if Bangor is too far a journey to Chester (Tiverton, just south of Chester), but the N'Ukes are hosting a camping uke weekend in July, at which other local groups are coming over to perform some of their sets, generally have fun.

Bangor would be more than welcome

Good luck with the club in Bangor too.

Your not alone!

Fear not! you are not alone anymore.. I am not strumming in the mountains, I am learning on the lighthouse on the corner of Holyhead..wish I could get to the meetings but evenings are bad for me. Still I will keep an eye on whats going on. Only a beginer but practise everyday.

Noswaith dda! Berni ydw i.

My brother lives up the coast from you in Prestatyn. I'll mention it to him; but he's a confirmed six stringer (though I am working on converting him) ;)

I live 60kms inland from Barcelona, so I won't be attending many of your club's functions ;). All the best with them!

Hwyl,

Berni

Ex of Ffynnongroew!

I'm in North Wales near the border (near Mold) and Bangor and Anglesey are just that bit too far to dash to on a regular evening.
It has occurred to me before that, as we're more spaced out around these parts, a regular weekly club doesn't suit us.

But what if we got a group together of like minded ukers from North Wales who say, meet up once a month, and each month a different member "hosts" in a venue local to them. We get the pleasure of a uke club to attend on a more casual monthly basis so regular travel is less of an issue, make some excellent new uke friends and every few months only have to go as far as our local pubs :)

Sunny Jim / rjac... would you be interested?

(Berni, you'd be exceptional welcome next time you're over this way!... a duet of Shimla always beckons!)
